01 Civic Auto Trans going out again?
01 Civic Auto Trans going out again?
I had our transmission rebuilt by a shop 14 months ago. We started hearing a whirring whining noise coming from the transmission area. of course the warranty expired 2 months ago. The noise increases with vehicle speed. At idle I can rev the engine and it does not happen.
The first time it went out was because of the known issue with the bad filter. When that happened it would whine and make noise at idle and when revving.
Not sure how I can check it to make sure its the trans or possibly a CV shaft. any help would be great..........

most rebuilds never last more than a year or two. when mine goes out im just getting a k20 swap and give up on it. unless you know someone really skilled with autos, chances are it will be a constant problem.
Re: 01 Civic Auto Trans going out again?
Yeah, I gave the car a good check this weekend and checked all the belts and stuff. All seems good engine wise. Which leads me to believe its transmission / CV shaft related since it only happens at speed and not engine rev.
What to do now. We already dropped 1300 on the repair last year. Warranty is up and looks like we will have to shell out some more cash. Maybe I should take it to on eof these transmission shops and have them diagnose it for me.

I know Honda updated these transmissions to cure the filter problem. I probably should have just went ahead and just got a brand new crate transmission from Honda instead of repairing this one.
This really sucks since we just spent $521 bucks on new tires and getting an alignment don eon the car too.

Here's my advice:
1. Swap in an 04/05 transmission, they have been proven to last longer and the speculation i've heard is the gasket material changed.
2. Do a manual swap and eliminate the auto-trans altogether.

A crate transmission is somewhere around $3000, with instillation that's not much less than the value of the car. Also, could you site a source for Honda updating the transmission because I've never heard that..

I'll be on the lookout for a 04-05 trans then. I've already checked craigslist with no luck.
If it were my car I would be all for a manual but this is for my fiance who has never driven a manual in all her life. Plus if I know the way she is I would be swapping clutches every 3 months.

Re: 01 Civic Auto Trans going out again?
not quite true. the 04-05 has not been updated as far as i know. it is simply a newer model and therefore there are fewer failures compared to a 10 yr old 2001. the design is mostly the same. give it a few more years and im sure you will see more 04-05 with problems. the average life if youre lucky is 100k miles. usually it is less. so once these 2005 models start to get more miles, they will have the same issues. its just buying you some time. and its not just a filter problem, its a defective clutch issue as well. the secondary clutch packs on these fall apart much sooner and eventually there is no friction material to grab onto. even with a better filtering system, the thing would still destroy itself inside. there are so many other issues i could spend a whole page describing things like bad seals and valve body. its just a really bad decision on hondas part to cheap out in 2001 when they had such a good reputation in older hondas. my best advice is find someone to put this "racing" rebuild kit in for you on the next repair. if they say they can't do it, find a shop that can. it has all new clutches and seals to replace the junk honda parts. but you really have to know your transmissions to install everything and do a complete job. this works for all 01-05 auto trans. it says 01-02 because at the time when they made the kit, only the 2002 civics were out.

Re: 01 Civic Auto Trans going out again?
you have to look at majority of users tho. 10k miles average per year would mean most 2005s only have 50-60k on them. as with the older trans, there are always exceptions. some failing sooner and others later. the 04-05s only had small body and interior changes, a vast majority of the electronics and mechanical stayed exactly the same from what ive read in the service manuals. there are only a few very small changes that require different pages for 01-03 vs 04-05. i cant remember the link anymore, but there was a huge posting of all sorts of 01-05 trans failures and i know there were many 04-05 mentioned as well.
Re: 01 Civic Auto Trans going out again?
Thanks for the input on that rebuild kit. If I can find a good trans guy locally I can take off the trans and put it back on the car myself. We will see what happens. I am first going to talk with the shop that did the repair the first time. See if by chance they can work out a deal even though I'm out of warranty.
Re: 01 Civic Auto Trans going out again?
UPDATE:
Went by the shop that rebuilt the trans. We took it for a test drive and the mechanic seems to think it is the passenger side wheel bearing. When he pulled the car to the right the noise seems to fade away a bit. When pullling to the left it seems to get a bit louder.
He didn't have time to change the bearing out today but I can do this on my own except I need to take it to Napa or a shop to get the bearing pressed in.
I did jack up the car and sprayed a bunch of lube inside the hub where the shaft meets the bearing and took it for a little spin. It seemed a bit quieter, not as loud as before. I hope to god its the bearing since its an easy fix.

Re: 01 Civic Auto Trans going out again?
Good news. I was able to get the knuckle off the car and indeed it was a bad bearing. The ball joint was loose also so I went ahead and replaced that too.
I had to take it to the same shop that did my transmission. For pressing the bearing in and installing my ball joint they charged me $60.
So all in all I spent about $150 on the bearing, ball joint plus labor.
I had a really hard time getting the knuckle back on the car. I had to actually take the LCA off to get everyihtng to line up then put the LCA back on.
Its fixed. No more noise.
