F#%^ Me I need help... engine seized!!
F#%^ Me I need help... engine seized!!
Hello all, I am new here, but have had my 7 gen since it was new... 2002. I have had some serious noise coming from the passenger side of engine.. belt and pulleys. thinking it was some bad bearings or a pulley loose and rubbing bad. Just now driving not even a 1/4 mi it got so much worse. I immediately turned around and after pulling up the car died. Plenty of elelctricity but will not turn over. Sounds horrible!! There was some smoke coming out of the first upper pulley as it died and there are metal shavings/dust.
Any thoughts on diagnosis?!?!!?
Thanks to all that can help!

it is past on timing belt, and nothing done for pump... it has 156k. So yeah I was worried this was coming. Any thoughts as to what that pulley runs?
Re: F#%^ Me I need help... engine seized!!
Well, the crank pulley is connected to the camshaft and the water pump. If the timing belt were to break, you'd have a complete mess. I believe the d17 is an "interference" style motor, meaning that if the belt goes, all of your valves would be destroyed, and it would be a very costly repair.

d17...?? I do have the Si. is that still referencing mine? Guess I wasn't clear on that. I didn't think that the smoking pulley was the crank shaft, one but I am not sure at all, on that point I was wondering what it 'operates' more than costs... I think I screwed in that department already!!

^^ Yes, you are correct. The head is wasted.
To the OP: The head is wasted. Your looking at $2000 w/labor- at least. You can have it ground to spec but, it will probably never be the same again. Talk to the mechanic but, your probably better off with a new engine. It's usually about $3000 w/labor for an engine swap. Unless you know someone.

The EP3 engine is an interference engine as well. If it was the timing belt went, like jponto said, you can risk bending the valves. Some people get lucky. Others, not so much. If you said the top pulley was smoking, I'd guess it'd be the power steering pulley. My engine has the belts on the driver's side, and that belt sits the highest up. From the bottom to the top, mine goes, A/C, alternator, then PS.
Lazlong is right though. You're better off just getting a new engine at this point.

I have a k20 head I could sell you, but shipping would be nuts. You might be able to get one from a local wrecker for a few hundred dollars.
Getting a new head is definitely the way to go, that way it might cost only $2000ish dollars because your not paying for the head to be machined and you can sell your junk one for a few bucks.

Piicturressss before you jump to the conclusion you need a new heaaaddd.............. Unless youve already diagnosed this and absolutely positively know your timing belt snapped.
Re: F#%^ Me I need help... engine seized!!
Update... So it turns out that the idle pulley fried itself out...
Also learned and thought it good to pass on, that there is no service interval for the timing chain for the 7th gen Si as it should last as long as oil changes are done regularly. It is metal so there is always a life span... but it is built to last. Just another reason why I looooove me some Honda's!!!
Never thought I'd be so happy to spend $500 (including towing) in my life.. lol

does this K have belt or chain? (since everyone except the OP is talking about timing belts...) Sorry, saw this thread only today...
Re: F#%^ Me I need help... engine seized!!
Not sure what 'K' means, but the K20A3 engine has a chain... wasn't sure myself at first until I called my old dealership to ask some questions.

K as in K-series engine - what you have
they could be K20xx, K24xx (xx being the other codes like A2, A3, etc depending on engine configuration).
Non-Si have the D17A2 (v-tec SOHC, EX model) or D17A1 all the others in the 7th gen.
6th gen have the B-series (like the K, but i guess they had the timing belts - being the reason MelJ was thinking on belts) and the D-series, EX with V-tec, other no V-tec.
duh! got excited and laid all this out...
