Strange check engine light issue
Strange check engine light issue
Hey all,
So ive been googling to no avail.
I have a 2002 Civic SI with 88k on it. I was driving home cruising at about 70mph , and have not had a check engine light come on while owning the car (have only owned it for 3 months though) and the light suddenly came on.
The runs fine, nothing noticeably different from before. Runs fine at all RPM and gas milage is normal.
I went the next day to auto zone to have the code read to find out to my shock there were 6 codes that came on.
They are the following.
P0108 Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure Circuit High Input
P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction
P0113 Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor Circuit High Voltage
P1505 Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) Air Leakage
P0505 Idle Control System Malfunction
P1298 Electric Load Detector (ELD) Circuit High Voltage
I did install an amp and subwoofer approx. 30 days ago. It works fine and I checked all the wiring and everything looks solid.
On the slips that autozone printed for me they list some possible causes. Most of these share " open or short circuit condition" and failing/failed ECM.
I have no idea where to start with this and dont really have the money to pay Honda to tear threw it. I have a nice heated garaged (awesome living in MA ) and plenty of tools / electrical testers I just dont have much know how.
Car runs great, no idea why the lights on.
Anyone ever come across anything like this?

Re: Strange check engine light issue
All those sensors won't go out at the same time. P1298- ELD is probably the problem. Very common. Check out this thread for info on diagnosing P1298: https://www.civicforums.com/forums/3...ce-please.html

LookTroysOn . . .
if you are referring to the malfunction indicator light (check owners manual, pg63) . . . many stories of this happening all over the internet.
mine is a 2002 lx model . . . happens from time to time. the very first time it happened, think i had 80k miles on the odometer . . . the light finally went off after another 1k of driving. it appeared again . . . after another 10-12k miles . . . disappears after another 500 or so miles.
you can look at replacing your gas cap . . . might not be dealing with pressure adequately . . . but make certain it is an original factory gas-cap and not a cheapie from auto-depot.
whatever you do . . . do not believe the service advisor at your local honda dealership . . . they will insist the problem is the catalytic converter . . . which will cost $1700 or more. heck . . . who you think pays these advisor's salaries ?
remember the dummy light is yellow and not red . . . the green dummy lights emit "all-systems-go" . . . yellow for just an alert . . . only the red signifies "danger!" .
one thing you might try is tightening the gas-cap a bit more . . . turning it three or four times, rather than simply once. you might try, one day later, again tightening the gas-cap.
i now got 260k miles on my '02 civic . . . and this light has appeared no less than . . . i'd say 1-1½ dozen times . . . each time eventually disappearing after 500-700 miles.
i will say one thing . . . the gas-guage is jacked . . . never worked properly from day one (new car lot). 99% of the time it tells me there is no gas . . . but there are still three gallons left. and once every so often, the gas-guage will be true . . . and i will be left stranded on the highway.
just another of honda's dang glitches. seems ever since honda allowed america to assemble their vehicles (instead of japan), the cars seem to fall apart much more often.
dang i miss my 1980 civic . . . was imported directly from japan.

Re: Strange check engine light issue
There was a thread here a while ago about failing ECM's that need to be replaced- it was years ago- I'd search for it and see if it applies to you.
