problem with my power door locks?

i have a '02 civic lx sedan and when i was driving the other night i pressed the lock/unlock switch on my door panel and none of the doors would lock. i usually lock the doors while i'm driving because i'm a tiny 23 year old girl who goes to college in a pretty bad area so i'm nervous when driving alone, especially at night. i have no clue what the problem could be. the doors will not lock from the switch on my drivers door but they will unlock by the switch? also, the car does lock from the outside and i do not have keyless entry. any ideas on what the problem might be?

Re: problem with my power door locks?

if you are inside the car (with all doors closed) and you press down the driver door lock (not the switch), do all the doors lock along with it? if they do, then you prolly have a bad lock switch. you dont have to replace it right away, you can just use the driver door lock instead. it controls all the other 3 locks for each door. if that doesnt work either, you may have a bad driver door switch (the nipple thing on the inside between the car and the door that gets pressed when you close the door). if it is not working, the car will think your driver door is open and you will not be able to use the lock switch to lock the doors. but you can still use it to unlock them. its a safety so you do not lock yourself out.

Re: problem with my power door locks?

thank you so much for your help! i just tried it and yes, all 3 other doors lock when i manually press the lock on my door down. i know this might sound really stupid (but i know nothing about cars! i used to rely on my dad whenever something would go wrong but i'm 4 hours away from home now, haha) would i have to order a new lock switch from a dealer or would i be able to order one from a parts store?

Re: problem with my power door locks?

does your dome light work properly? like when you open the driver door, does it turn on? and then turn back off when you close the door (after maybe 10 seconds)? if dome light works normally, then i would say it is the power lock switch. it is a dealer-only item. should be around $10 and something you can change yourself. make sure they order the right color either black or beige depending what your interior is.

the switch you need is #1 (bottom left corner), and it screws to the back of the door handle as shown. all you have to do is remove the door handle to change the lock switch.

first pry off the cover panel #13 in the back of the door handle you use to open the door from the inside. a small flat screwdriver will work when you insert it in the top middle of the panel.

remove the two star screws behind that. jiggle out the door handle now that it is loose. it will not come out fully because there is a locking clip holding the rod. you have to pry it off and pivot the clip off the rod, then pop the rod up and out of the clip to release the door handle. unplug the lock switch harness connector.

that is really the hardest part. once the door handle is free, turn it over and remove the screws holding the lock switch and replace it with the new one. put the rod back in the clip, rotate the clip until it locks in place like before, put back the two screws, and snap the cover back on just be careful not to drop the lock switch connector inside the door panel or it might be hard to get it out when installing back the new switch.

Re: problem with my power door locks?

yes, the dome light works as normal. when i press the door lock, all of the doors will unlock. then when i press it down to lock the doors, none of the doors lock and there is no noise at all like there is when it unlocks. my friend took the door handle off and unplugged the door lock switch from this white plug that was plugged into the switch and pressed inside it with a screwdriver and it would unlock and not lock. is it possible that all 4 of the actuators have gone bad all at once or does this still indicate the door lock switch itself?

Re: problem with my power door locks?

if any actuator was bad, then that door would not lock by itself when you manually push the driver lock button. i still think its the switch. one other thing is, the power lock button will not work (lock) if the key is in the ignition. it also will not work with the driver door open. but in both cases the unlock button still works. i hope all this time you did not just have the key in the ignition when you were trying to power lock the doors.

Re: problem with my power door locks?

I'm thinking a broken wire maybe (if the switch was bad then it should have locked when he bypassed the switch, YEL/RED = Lock, WHT/BLK = Unlock, BLK is ground)

IIRC those wire can be found behind the drivers side kick panel... You could locate and briefly ground the YEL/RED and see if it will lock from down there.

Re: problem with my power door locks?

Drivers door lock actuator Dead. I see these all the time from mainly 96 and up civics, acura etc.

The DLA's motor tend to rust up and the motors quit. The doors will lock by manually pushing down the driver's door pin.

Re: problem with my power door locks?

^^ I would listen closely at the drivers door on the 1st press of the unlock button for noises from the door. Almost sounds like an open wire to the drivers actuator motor.

It is normal for the doors to lock when drivers door is shut and you push down on the lock **** button up top of door panel.
