Engine runing but car won't go anywhere

Engine runing but car won't go anywhere
Hi,
I have a 2002 honda civic automatic transmission and I was driving yesterday and everything was OK. But in the middle of the drive, when i tried to accelerate to faster speeds say from 40 to 60 the the engine would just rev up but i could not get the speed. I could feel as though it did not shift into a higher gear. I did not give much importance thinking it may be due to icy roads.
So I drove further for 10 mins and I had stopped at an intersection. Then I tried to drive but the car won't move enven though the engine was running. So I was stalled in the middle of the road during which i called the tow truck. But after say 15 mins I tried to run and i was able to drive for another 5 mins and then stalled. The engine was still running but car wont move. It was also not the case of tires spinning in ice. So finally I had to get it towed.
So can someone suggest what's the problem with the car stopping but engine still runing? I checked the transmission fluid and its OK. Thanks in advance!!

any engine light on? if not, its prolly dead trans. seems to be picking up again around here.
