Timing belt...time limit?

So I was on here reading up on the timing belt DIYs and it doesn't look like fun on this car (or any car for that matter).

I am faced with a decision. The car (2004 civic) only has 55,000 miles (GF bought it a few months ago). With that being said the timing belt is 6 years old but has not reached the mileage limit (I think is 90,000 miles?).

Should I worry about changing the timing belt this winter or should I let it ride? I am a bit spooked since the reason she got this car was because the timing belt broke on her Stratus, but it had never been done @ 190k miles

Re: Timing belt...time limit?

Check the wear on the belt, if it looks solid, drive it till 90k
I'm on 60k and it looks fine

If it looks like its cracked/wearing, then you should change it

Or just change it for peace of mind

Re: Timing belt...time limit?

Best to check the belt. Unfortunately conditions make a big difference. I'm in Canada and I pulled my belt with 80k miles on it this summer(my car is a 2005). The belt looked brand new with not much wear at all on it. I changed it because I was mid head gasket replacement anyway. That being said, you may have 60k miles and your belt could be chewed... Check it.. might wanna do a valve adjustment while your there... if you have any kind of ticking at all from the engine.
