Bad Mileage
Hi guys! This is my first post and im kinda new to cars to give me a chance. anyway, i have a 2005 civic LX and i've had it for about 2 years. going on 3. Im not sure about anyone else but i get about 270 miles per tank. about 25-27 mpg. I saw that some people with even older cars than mine have gotten even better mileage. going up too 400 and have 320 on "bad days". i change my oil religiously, i check my tires, and i've changed my air filter. any other ideas? thanks for the help guys, and sorry for the long post!

Re: Bad Mileage
older civics are lighter and smaller engines.
27-28 is my normal overall city/hgwy , but during long travel, (more than 1 tank) i get some good 42-44 MPG.

Re: Bad Mileage
try to make a long trip (close to one tank) and prolly you will get more mileage. helps on cleaning the engine, maybe? I usually get the engine happier after such trips.

Re: Bad Mileage
the only way to really find out your highest mileage is to drive a constant speed and distance on the highway (55mph if possible) for most of the tank, in the summer (70-75F) and altitude will matter too. there are so many factors that its hard to say what will happen.

Re: Bad Mileage
Or (which I'm shocked that gearbox didn't say!) go get some lube control FP and throw it in your tank. I did that right before driving from Chicago to Seattle and I was getting about 43mpg. Before I had to drive through the mountains, of course.
Aside from that you seem normal, I avg around 370 miles to a tank out here. But then again, I'm now in an area where it's very hilly and I don't do nearly as much highway driving as I used to.

Re: Bad Mileage
i have a 2005 civic lx with an AT with a 2.25 cat back exhaust stock intake and 205/55/16's and i average about 23-26 mpg if i do all in town driving, i drive 34 miles to work 1 way and its alot of passing people doing 50mph and i average about 30-32 in that nature
ok now gearbox stated driving 55MPH will net you the best mileage but i disagree. i drove from bakersfield to fresno doing 70mph with almost no variation in speed and i netted 45 mpg with a little bit of in town driving before i found a gas station. on the way back to bakersfield i drove 65 and i netted 42 mpg with almost no variation in speed with the ac going in 90+ degree weather both directions, so maybe every car is different but my cars sweet spot is 70mph. all my mileage readings and speed were done via GPS so my numbers should be dead on

Re: Bad Mileage
wow that is impressive, i guess it depends on the car and mods. and also you have an LX. if you go above 65mph (or 2900 rpms) in an EX, part of the vtec system turns on and causes worse mileage. it stays off below that rpm.

Re: Bad Mileage
That was with the car full of moving stuff. using medium octane gas makes the mileage go down 2 MPG, also, so always high octanes.
It behaves better with V-tec, more efficient, i guess.
Re: Bad Mileage
It also has a lot to do with how you are driving it. If you bounce it off the rev limiter all of the time you will no doubt get crappy mileage. There is an episode of top gear where they have a BMW M5 follow a prius around a track for 10 laps and the BMW gets 5 mpg better than the prius. My step dad gets about 27mpg on the freeway in his 500+ HP Z06 Corvette on the freeway, beacuse it idles along in 6th gear and is very aerodynamic. Try keeping you foot off the gas you will be amazed at what you can get. My dad used to get 35mpg in my eclipse when he drove it, while I would get about 20 mpg because I would spool the turbo all of the time. Anyway you get the idea.
Remember that accelerating uses the most gas. There are other factors such as Manual tranny gets better mileage than A/T on most cars. Aerodynamics can play a big factor. The gearing of the tranny. The tires/tire pressure. How heavy your car is.
