Set proper belt tension?

What rule of thumb do u go by to set the correct belt tension on alternator and power steering belts?
How much up and down play do u want in the belt? 1/2 inch? 3/4 inch? ????
thanks

There should be no sag in the belt at all. Get it as tight as it goes.
