No Fuel

Hey all

I'm working on my friend's 2001 LX 5-speed. It has 260k miles on it and it died on him just after he started it up and began to take off. Hasn't started since.

I checked all the fuses and the starter cranks, etc. I tried push starting it, and that didn't work. Finally found out when I pulled a fuel line that there's no fuel going to the engine. Now I do hear a VERY faint humming noise coming from the fuel pump when I prime it (turn the key to ON), but it sounds extremely quiet...not sure if it's just a really quiet fuel pump or it's messed up. Also the immobilizer light turns on when I turn the key and goes off after a few seconds so I don't think it's that.

I'm fairly sure this is a fuel pump issue but I just wanted to makes sure before making him spend $150 on a new one. Is there any way to test it for sure? I even took off the top plate covering the fuel sending unit to try and hear the fuel pump better and it's still very quiet.

Re: No Fuel

you should prolly check the fuel pressure first. they sell gauges at the auto store but not sure if they will have the right size to fit the line for our car.

Re: No Fuel

Is he out of gas? This may sound stupid but is it possible that his fuel gauge is messed up? My fuel pump is pretty quiet too, it only hums like that so I don't think that's the issue. I don't know if there is a way to check fuel pressure with no fuel coming out? It could also be a faulty relay behind the glove box for the fuel system.

Re: No Fuel

Hey guys thanks for the suggestions. We have a little change in scenery now.

It turns out the line I unplugged was the freakin vacuum line. lol. I unplugged the fuel line and the fuel is coming out when priming/cranking. I did this after I changed out the damn pump...crap. So the fuel pump is new! haha

SO now it's got me thinking it's something electronic. The starter is turning fine, you can see the belts moving when cranking it. I'm thinking it's spark. I tested all the coils and they all came out with the same 14.85 +- 0.2 on the 20k ohm reading. The spark plugs are under 5k miles old. I couldn't reach the crank position sensor but that could be a likely culprit. Otherwise, what? ECU? I'm lost! I think we might have it towed since I don't have an OBD2 scanner and cant check to see if it's throwing a code or not...

Oh yeah and he's not out of gas. He was low, but the first thing i did was to put 2 gallons in.

Re: No Fuel

Check for spark at the plugs. Pull out the boot and remove the plug, reattach to boot and while cranking hold it close to a piece of steel. If it sparks, you have spark. Do this for every one. Once you determine it's okay, post again and we will lead you in another direction

Re: No Fuel

What about the injectors? Wiring good, getting electrical signal, not clogged, etc?
