Odd Rear Suspension Noise
Odd Rear Suspension Noise
I posted a thread in the general forum about this once before, but I think it got overlooked due to the abundance of suspension noises with the 7th gen Civics. I'm starting to get quite desperate for an answer on this one, though, since it's driving me nuts.
I've got an '01 LX Coupe with about 107,000 miles on it. The right rear suspension makes this hollow "fwap!" noise every single time it rebounds on a sharp bump. So like every little dip, hole, change in pavement height, ripple, etc. that causes the wheel to drop down causes the noise. I even notice it coming out of our driveway when the right rear wheel sorta falls down off the little curb onto the pavement. It's not speed dependent at all, and it only happens on rebound (not on the initial compression). The left rear suspension sounds normal (i.e., quietly damped) when hitting the same obstacles. I asked my mechanic to tighten all the suspension bolts last time I had it in, which he did, but none of them were abnormally loose. It doesn't seem like a shock's bad, and the wheel nuts are tight. It has stock-size wheels and tires.
Any insight would be hugely appreciated...

Re: Odd Rear Suspension Noise
did you ever have the shocks changed? sounds like something is not sitting right, or maybe a shock mount is broken.
Re: Odd Rear Suspension Noise
The shocks are stock and original, never changed. The rear suspension seems to still be tight, but I kinda agree with you in wondering if one of the shocks has started to separate from the car. Is that a common problem? Do you access the shock mounts from the exterior or interior of the car? This car has been pampered - I usually run down the road dodging holes and bumps, or at least slowing down to a crawl for them. Thanks again...
