Car shaking in rain - PLEASE HELP DIAGNOSE!
Car shaking in rain - PLEASE HELP DIAGNOSE!
Hey all. Sometimes when my car goes through a puddle, or goes through standing water on the road (from a good rain shower) for an extended period of time, it starts to act funny. First, the exhaust noise changes. It goes from a full sound to a sound like its struggling. As I brake at this point, the car starts shaking. When I get to idling, it starts shaking pretty badly sometimes, and gives me the feeling that its gonna die, which, amazingly, it never has. When I go to apply pressure to the gas again, it does the same thing, but eventually goes away when I get into a higher speed range. At idle, my rpms look pretty normal. The only mods I have are I/H/E. My intake is a sri and the filter is near the battery, so I think its almost impossible to get water into the engine through it. The headers... well, I can't even think of a potential situation with these causing the problem. Could there be a hole in my exhaust? (Cause if there is, i've missed it). The exhaust sounds fine in dry weather. I love my car. Its solid all around otherwise. I just can't figure this annoying problem out, Any help would be appreciated. THANKS!

exhaust hole is possible, but then it would make noise all the time. sounds like the metal pipe is getting wet and cold and weird things happen like rattles, expanding, and other stuff. if it goes away when dry, i wouldnt worry. it could also be some water that splashed on the o2 sensors. remember the sensors read oxygen levels on both sides, so water may screw up the readings a bit. both of the two sensors are very close to the ground so its very possible they are getting wet.

Could it be that the spark plug wires are getting wet? Or that water's getting in through the distributor cap? These are a couple solutions i've come across in researching this...

i have aftermarket exhaust and have noticed that too. i think its just the pipe hitting the car body. the stuff under the hood shound stay dry. you can open the hood and check when it happens tho and see if its actually coming from under the hood or under the car.

Yeah, and its a little scuffed up from almost 7 years of driving. I was thinking that could be allowing water to get up into the motor, so i guess that might be worth replacing... its just a pretty penny for the oem part that i was hoping i could get around.

Well Go Check it if its losse that might be the problem.. U dont need to go to the dealership, go to junkyard and get it, if u do decide to change it... It might not be that..
