How can I deterime which belt driven componet is bad. I have herd a whinning noise for a while which has just turned into a rumble. I think that it is an alternater, PS pump, A/C comperssor or the water pump. It is a 2001 civic with 110K. I checked under the hood and don't see anything loose. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

probibly powersteering. you can use a stehiscope or a screwdriver and hold it tight against the component you are testing. place your ear at the end or in the ear bungs. you can hear the noise. or, you can remove P/S belt. if noise is still present, remove A/C belt. if noise is still there, remove altornator belt. of noise is sill there, you need to look elsewhere....
