LOUD KNOCK! newly installed motor w/ freshened up head

i had a question for all you guys... i installed a new motor from a member on this forum (said to be rebuilt with new bearings and piston rings) and everything seems fine in the block.. i previously had my old head refreshened meaning all new seals etc etc. so pretty much a brand new head. the head ran fine on another motor after all the work was done to it. i simply took the head off of my old motor and put it on my new one. i did not touch one thing on it. the timing belt is on correctly as well, no skipped tooths..

however there is a loud knock that seems to come from the intake side of the head. the con rod and bearings/bolts are fine on all of the cylinders, a valve didnt drop either.. the knocking noise seems to come from the top of the motor (valves/pistons) . the knocking noise is very quiet at idle but when i give it the slightest gas (over 1000rpm), the knocking noises volume increases dramatically. i checked the valve clearances on all the valves and they are all within spec.

i grounded out each spark plug to see if the knocking noise would be lessened/eliminated (by removing the coil pack in each cylinder) and no luck, the knocking still remains the same. so my obvious guess would be its coming from the head. normally i would think it would be the valves but the valve clearances are fine. sssssssoooooooooooo.

whats the deal!? HHHHHAAALPP!

vtec head, the guy that i bought it from works at a shop and he assembled it and shipped it to me so i hope he used assembly lube! i primed the motor until the oil pressure light was off on the first start up as well.

Sounds like you need to drop the pan and the girdle and have a look at the main bearings. Did you check to make sure all the rocker caps were torqued down when you checked the valve lash?

^^i am going to drop the oil pan and check that out, if all seems good there i will rip off the head too.. i didn't check the rocker caps when i did the valve clearances. originally i would expect everything to be good yno? i will check the caps and jazz when i get the time. anything else to check? o_O

I agree with speedfoo, sounds like the bearings may be at fault.

Re: LOUD KNOCK! newly installed motor w/ freshened up head

i dont really see how it can be a bearing though because the noise is blatantly coming from the top of the head.. i used my stethoscope everywhere on the motor: oil pan, block (each cylinder), head (each cylinder). no noise from oil pan, little noise from the block (my guess is its echoing from the head), and VERY loud noise from the head. maybe il post a video in a bit. regardless i will check it when i get the chance

If you think it's coming from the head, then you need to check everything in the head. Valve lash (again), all the rocker caps, valves (seals, guides, seats) and so on. Honda engines transfer noise in strange ways sometimes so you have to check everything that moves and rule out what things aren't making any noises they shouldn't.
