valves, lifters and springs
hey people, just curious, when is it time to replace your valves, lifters, and springs, i'm getting a small knock at startup, when oil pressure is low, and am wondering if replacing these parts will help, or if i should just flush the motor
ps its an 01 lx 103,000 miles, running mobil 1 5w20 with lucas synthetic oil additive since i bought it, and yes i drive fairly hard

Re: valves, lifters and springs
what is your basis for determining you have low oil pressure?
None of the above would cause that, worn bearings or a worn pump would cause low pressure.

Re: valves, lifters and springs
Mobil 1 is really bad on your D17, the only thing saving you from problems is lucas synthetic. You should switch to Castrol. I know this because I recently had an oil analysis performed @ 83,239 miles by a company doing the same for some top fuel cars and some NASCAR competitors. If your interested in the conversation I had (by email) I can send it to you. in short I was informed that (M1 brakes down to soon) and we all know what happens when oil starts braking down and loosing its viscosity?! If your interested feel free to PM me just remind me of the thread.
Re: valves, lifters and springs
To answer your question, you shouldn't have to replace any of those parts as regular maintenance. However, due to your mileage and complaint of a noisy cold startup, a valve adjustment could be needed.

Re: valves, lifters and springs
no, whats something like that run, or can i do it myself?? it sounds like a slight tapping, but once it heats up it gets better, i only hear it when im next to a building or another car, could it also be an exhaust leak?
Re: valves, lifters and springs
I did mine myself....not too difficult if you have the tools and are mechanically inclined. I would say its harder than changing an altenator, less work than a timing belt but the same care and attention to detail. There alot of cycling to TDC's in order to get it done. If I had to guess, Honda would want about 100 bucks or more to do the job.

cool thx for the info, just installed my new kamikaze header and i think the problem is solved, cus the noise went away, think it was a header leak, cuz its blown, and so was the gasket

Re: valves, lifters and springs
Weird, but glad to see the problem was solved.
Btw, you only need to worry about fixing your valves when their out of spec- and if you want to find that out, you need to crack the head open and buy a gauge or two.
