Rebuild or Replace Transmission PLEASE HELP ME OUT!!!!

So I filled a big complaint with Honda about my 2001 Honda Civic transmission's 3rd and 5th gear grinding with only 88k on it. Through many phone conversations, they offered to pay more then half the "cost" of the transmissions 3rd and 5th gear, gear set. It will run with hondas help $768.00 and since they are in there, I told them to go ahead and replace the clutch and cut down on the labor. They priced the clutch at $415.00 and with tax and everything i am looking at $1225.00. After talking to a friend, he said he could get a transmission out of a honda civic with low mileage for only $450 and a clutch for like $200, and put it in for like $250 which is really cheap. But I know that 2001 civics have synchroizer problems which is what I is wrong with my car, and I am scared that if I get another transmission that it is going to have the same problem and therefore I just wasted all that money. Can yall help me deside. Should I go with Honda or with this other guy. (Other guy is cheaper and everything is Honda parts) Any questions I should ask "the guy" when I talk to him to make sure everything is straight with the tranny? Thanks you all.

Re: Rebuild or Replace Transmission PLEASE HELP ME OUT!!!!

I just had mine rebuilt at Aamco. I weighed my options and came up with that conclusion. It cost me about $1200 it was worth it because of the warantee they offer. Now I can beat the crap out of it. The trans from a 2001 and a 2005 years are all swapable I think. Dont quote me on that. Maybe someone can correct me if I am mistaken. Look into it. My reverse sprag went bad and screwed up a couple of others. Good luck with your choice. Make sure if you have someone rebuild it you get a warantee.

Thanks for the offer, but I can either replace 3rd and 5th gear, or get another transmission that does not have problems. I really do not want to buy another transmission with the same problem and end back up in the boat that I am in now. Honda will offer a warranty, and the other guy offers a short warranty. This is a really hard decision.

If anyone cares, I went with getting it rebuilt. They also noticed that 4th gear, hub bearing, differential bearing, axle seal. Pushing the price up 400 more but honda is still helping. I'll keep yall posted!
