01-04 cluster swap gas gauge problem!!!

So we rewired and plugged in the 04 cluster in and it worked .. but when I used the auto start from my compustar autostart we heard a click, car starts up fine.. but now the gas gauge shows that the gas is running on empty ... even though I just filled it up.. anyone have any ideas?

We checked the fuse already..
we had to splice some of the wires, could it be a bad splice?

theres nothing wrong right? just probably the wire that was spliced isnt recieving signal to the cluster? should it have anything to do with my compustar alarm?

Thanks for your replies guys.

yeah .. but then after that everything started fine.. we are currently thinking it was one of the wires we spliced.. cause canadian tire was closed we couldnt buy the proper stuff and had to strip the wires ourselves heh ill post a pic for u to see what I mean.. we are gonna try and fix that on tuesday and see what happens.. but everything was fine until after the alarm and splice

edit heres pic:
you can see the splice here .. spliced twice so maybe a problem..

heres a pic of the cluster installed and working..

besides that there were 3 problems we encountered..
1. SRS Light (which can be reset using the pin method)
2. ABS Light (no solution yet other than getting honda to do it)
3. lag in the speedometer (from start up to whatever)

ya, if you're going to canadain tire to buy stuff, buy some shrink wrap instead of electrical tape as well. Let us know how it goes

that's a lot of problems. maybe i won't swap mine after all. good luck with it. i'd start by redoing the splice, and go from there.

well the problems are little problems that can be solved easily... but in my case it was either I pay for a new clsuter from honda ($900 quoted) or DIY it and have a better cluster :P heh but good thing the problems are easily fixable..(prays)

ok guys.. I re-secured the wires with butt connectors from canadian tire heh everything works 100% now ..

as for the lag it wasnt a lag.. sry I just didnt get used to seeing 0 then to 20.. cuz the 0-20 is really close so it dosnt really looks like it moved but it did lol so nevermind that..

heres the final wiring...

and heres the final look of the cluster

as for the ABS im just going to remove the bulb.. ez fix.. and the SRS ill do the reset tomorrow.. all and all ill never do this again, took way too long.. but it was either DIY it or pay $900 to honda..

now my question is ... what will happen if I take my car to honda for an oil change ? heh (no seriously.. will they be like ur not using ur original cluster we gonna call the cops on u?)

Re: 01-04 cluster swap gas gauge problem!!!

I actually just swapped my cluster too for a 2005 ex into my 2001 civic lx... the same issue for me... everything works fine except for the ABS w/ the steering wheels comes up, right arrow blinker doesnt light up, & the gas gauge says im on empty when i filled the tank up prior to installing it... I used some leftover crimpers & butt connector that i though was somewhat bigger than the wires itself, but not really sure if that was the case... I had leftover wires from my lx harness, what do I do w/ those wires, should they go inot the remaining socket for the harness or just leave them dangling out???? I attempt to rotate the gas needle clockwise and that doesnt do anything... Please if somebody see this, help me out to fixing this issue..

thanks a lot in advances for any replies or recommendation.

Re: 01-04 cluster swap gas gauge problem!!!

The only known issues you should have with a properly and correctly done swap are:

1. ABS Light (if your car does not have ABS)
2. SRS Light (will go away if you reset it)
3. DRL Light constantly on (depends only seen this problem on EL > CIVIC Swap)

all the other errors that you are experiencing are either the cluster you have is bricked.. or you wired the wires wrong.. blinker lights should work no problem and for the gas make sure its plugged into the correct connector and the LX and the rest are different the diagrams are for the EX so be careful.. DO NOT CUT ANY WIRES... tie them up and keep them in there cause you never know when you will need them ..

the butt connectors dont worry, as long as they are properly crimped and the connecting parts are connected you shouldnt have a problem. But if your gas isnt working that probablly means you either plugged it in wrong or its not connecting/detecting power.

DO NOT play with the needles on any cluster whether it be 04 or 03.. its been known to **** up especially on the 03+ clusters.. so you might have screwed it up already...
