well you shouldve picked sumthing else to start to learn how to drive Stick in. you will tear up that nice expensive tranny and clutch in that car in no time. the 4th gear scratching....hmm. is it in just that gear? if so then i suggest a bad syncro. if its in all gears then its you ISB(input shaft bearing) its a 45 dolar fix if its the bearing. anything else gets a little more expensive. and lets see the red line on that motor the B18c is about 8200 RPM. id say shift at 7500 and you should be good. Vtec engages at 5200RPM and with that tranny you should still be in Vtec when you shift and get into the next gear.

shift at 2500rpm and save gas, you street racer!

But anyways, yea just shift before you hit redline and you should be fine. If the tranny is having problems, its probably because it was abused already and since its a 98 ITR, I wouldnt doubt it.

So you loved drag racing your auto tranny. You're in a whole different world now. Worry about getting so you can drive it normally, then ease into performance driving. Please DO NOT destroy that car.

if your racing then you redline or get as close to redline as you can. thought that was common sense, its proven.

Most of the cars are loosing power towards the redline, so there's no point to rev all the way to the redline. If redline is at 8200 I'd switch at 7500.

that car was probably beat to **** before you bought it, that could be a reason for the tranny making that noise

but see you would want to stay in the powerband in the next gear..so no matter what you shift at redline to stay i nthe powerband. shift early and you run a chance of getting out of it anb losing the race

It all depends on where the powerband is on the specific car. Yes shifting at redline will garuntee you land in higher RPM and in the powerband, but some cars have a larger powerband while at higher RPMs you lose power. For instance if he shifts at 7500 and still lands in the powerband then it might be faster than shifting at the 8200 redline. Lets say you start to lose power at 7600, then you'll be losing power from 7600-8200 whereas if you shifted at 7500 you stay in the powerband and accelerate faster. People say shift at redline because they assume the car makes power all the way up to redline. A lot of cars make their best power at higher RPMs all the way to redline, but a lot of cars also lose power when they get up close to redline. This might suggest that you want to shift before redline. This is especially true if you can shift while you're at the max range of the powerband and after the shift you still land in the powerband.

Now I'm not sure what the powerband is for the 98 type R, but to my knowledge type Rs make power almost all the way up to redline so you should shift near that mark. That's why track testing your car is essential. You can try out different things on each run and see which yields the best times. You'll never learn this by simply street racing because there is no way to judge which shift point works better for you. I guess if you have that electronic timer that hooks up to your ecu, you could test it out different methods like that, but I've heard those weren't very accurate.
