'01 Test Drive: Road noise from Rear...
Hey all. Here is my deal, I found a good '01 Civic. One owner, 115k, good shape, very clean interior. Drove very well, until I got it up to highway speeds. When I got up to highway speeds a "revving" or a whirring noise came from the rear end. It kind of sounded like tires, but I cannot tell. As I drove faster, the sound got louder, and slightly more high pitched. The tires on the car were some sort of Goodyear's (Integrity?), and I might add, somewhat worn. My question is, has anyone experienced anything like this?
I went later on and drove an identical '02 with 26k on it, and it didn't make any sound like this at all.
Does anyone have any insight into this?
Thank You for yout input in advance.
PS- Yes. I know I need to take this car in to a mechanic before I think about purchasing this car.

Could be the tires or a wheel bearing. Not a BIG deal to fix.
If it is an automatic, though, I'd stay away from it unless you plan to replace the transmission very soon.

Yeah, I was just saying that if the car has an automatic tranny, I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole. 5 Speed is fine.
Don't buy a high mileage 01 Automatic unless you are prepared to replace the tranny at any moment.

yep- 115K, that many miles is too much- buy the 26Kmile civic.
the 01's problem could be some of the plastic that encases/makes the back wheel well- It could have come loose after 115k miles, or after the bumper was taken off and not fitted back on correctly. (I've only taken off my front and had this problem- I'm guessing its pretty close design in the back).
another cause COULD be because the car was lowered and the fenders werent rolled... who knows.
if your serious, snap some pics and we'll help you out. but dude, your really going to want to buy a lower mileage car then that.
enjoy!
