Aye Carumba! can YOU make sense of this?
Ok..so a brief rewind..
- took my car to the shop cuz it was making a rattling sound at idle and a winding sound in 1st gear.
- the rattle would go away when i pushed the clutch pedal in..and return when i let it out, it was very loud and noticable.
- the winding noise could only be heard very very slightly..most didn't notice it. could only be heard when the engine noise didn't drown it out.
ok...fast forward to now..(keep in mind, i have no idea what he was telling me..just wrote down what he said..)
- the shop i took it to called me. apparently, the winding noise is coming from the front bearing. the throw out bearing is going out..and he said there was WAY too much grease on the bearings that might have caused...um..somthing.
- he thinks the rattling was caused by the springs on the clutch plate. he said 1 was VERY loose..2 were pretty loose..and another 1 was ok. the rattling is a result of the engine vibration on the clutch plate. said he is going to try to "fix" the springs but may need to buy new ones.
- he said something about the shoulder/sleeve on the front of the transmission casing. said it needs to be replaced. im not sure what exactly was wrong with it..but i need a new one. he didn't tell me exactly what the part was called..but said the throw out bearing slides in and out on this..
(again, keep in mind..i have no idea what the hell all of this means...its just what he told me.)
--------------------------------------------------
i just wanna know
1...does what he told me sound...right? has anybody else had this problem?
2...where can i find the shoulder/sleeve he is talking about that is located at the front of the transmission casing?
3...for the springs..i think he said i may need to buy a new clutch..cant i just get springs?
can anybody perhaps take what i wrote..make sense of it..and try to explain it to me better? I wanna apologize 1 more time for my lack of knowledge in this area!!! thanks for any help!!!!!!!

Well basically the parts that control clutch movement internally as regarding to your transmission are worn or damaged......They need to be replaced. The shoulder/sleeve that he talked about is most likely the boot covering the area in which the slave cylinder pushes on the fork that controls the Throwout Bearings movement on the front of the tranny

i see...he said the clutch plate looks just fine..its the springs that push it (or whatever..) that are messed up. can i buy just those somewhere? if so..what do i search for...is there an actual name?
I dont believe you can get them seperate........You would probably have to buy a whole new clutch disc........Im kinda flabergasted about that though.......I dont think I have ever seen those springs go bad.............only on higher horsepower cars that should have had there clutches changed long before the problem.......but if you trust this mechanic then grab a new clutch disc and have him throw it in.

actually...i really didn't trust any mechanic in my town aside from going to Honda...but ive never been to this guy and this guy I actually like. hes been very straight forward with me...and i dunno..just seems very trustworthy..
anyways..he gave me another update..
the transmission casing was cracked..so thats what was making the rattling noise..when the pedal was pushed in the it didn't have any pressure on it so it wouldn't make the noise..
i do have to get a new clutch (actually im letting him get everything) hes not sure of the brand they have..but he said its very very similar to the exedy organic heavy duty one i had in there..he's going to get back to me with what brand it is.
the total is going to be about $1060 so..its not as bad as i thought..but at least my car will be in working order again

i would have said something similar...throwout bearing and such. i had a similar problem with my old beater escort gt when i was in high school...loose transmission bolts caused uneven wear and stress on the throwout bearing...vibrated like a sum-bish when the car was in gear...eventually cracked the bellhousing as well from the vibration....hope everything goes alright for you...i ended up replacing the parts myself...not exactly difficult in itself, but def a learning experience

Indeed. That job should cost half that. WITH the parts.
Too much grease in a BEARING is a good thing. Too LITTLE grease in a bearing will make it fail. Ever re-PACK a wheel bearing?? Anyway, sounds like you need a new clutch disc (that's where the buffer springs are), a throw-out bearing, the yoke, collar, tube or whatever you call it that the throw out bearing slides on, and while you are at it, spend the extra $40 for a new pressure plate. As for the transmission being cracked, SHOW ME. If it IS, it will need a new housing. That's half a rebuild job, and costly. In that case I can understand the price. But I'd go look at it with my own 3 eyes first.
Aside from that, the average clutch job costs $300 - $600, depending on who does it. My last one was $380. WITH parts.

THANKS for chiming in NOW guys!
jk!
about having too much grease...maybe he didn't say it was on the bearing..but there was too much grease on a part that there shouldn't have been grease...or..uh..like i said earlier, on something that caused something.
haha..ok, flame me now, cuz i don't know **** about this!
anyway, i think i said earlier in this thread, or perhaps in a different thread about my transmission problem, that i don't really trust any shop in my town. we only have a handfull of them, and the ones ive been to always seem fishy and i have to like negotiate with them and what not. apparently, my pops has been to this guy many times in the past and thats why he recommened i go there. my dad says he knows him..so thats good enough for me to trust him. plus, not many mechanics i know will call at 8:00pm from their homes to give us an update because we couldn't be reached all day. that, and with my first impression of this guy gives me a good feeling hes not trying to rip me off.
i hope im as good a judge of character as i think i am! cuz the work should all be done today, finally!

uh..... 1 small problem...
if it is the throwout bearing, you would only hear the sound when the clutch is PRESSED IN.
what you are describing sounds like the input shaft bearing. I have broken 2 of these bearings.
even when your car is in neutral, the input shaft will be spinning when the clutch is engaged. So it will be making the sound. But when you push the clutch in, the input shaft stops spinning so the noise goes away.
the throwout bearing is only spinning when you push the clutch pedal in. Otherwise, the bearing isnt spinning. So it couldnt make any noise unless the pedal is pressed in (which is the opposite of what you are describing)
To fix the input shaft bearing, you have to split the case on the tranny, remove the cluster gear, replace the $23 bearing, then re-assemble the tranny.

finally got it back..
i paid 464 for parts and
600 for labor! plus tax..it came out to 1100 even.
had to replace 1/2 trans case, clutch, pressure plate and some bearings...probably paid way to much for labor...but i KNOW i couldn't have done it on my own..and at least i have peace of mind that its done correctly with a warrenty. thanks for the help folks
