Tranny slipping....

I know we have a lot of knowledgeable people here so I figured I'll ask..... this is for my beater which is a 92 Maxima AUTO tranny.

Today it started slipping pretty badly which is a given that the tranny is on the verge of failing but here is what I do not understand:

The tranny only slips when its changes from 2nd gear into 3rd..... in that split second where the car is in between gears it all of the sudden revs up liek its in neutral. I then let go off the gas pedal and just glide for a couple seconds and feel the gear slide into place, then I press the gas and the car goes like normal.

ANother weird thign is that the change from 1st to 2nd is smooth as always and the change from 3rd to 4th is smooth as always. This ONLY occurs when I am accelerating..... lets say around 2500 rpms the car usually goes from 2nd into 3rd but at 2500 rpms right before the transition it just revs up like its in neutral.....

Any ideas, let me know.

Have it flushed first. It may be a sticky valve body and not a clutch pack. A stall test would tell you for sure. To do a stall test, make sure the car is warmed up. Pull the park brake and stand on the brake pedal. Put the tranny into 1st or 2nd if you don't have a 1st. Floor it just long enough to see how high the rpm goes. Let the tranny cool a few seconds and test in the next gear and up to drive. In D it will test 1st gear by default. A good tranny will "stall" under 3000 RPM. Usually around 2000 or so. If one gear just goes up, the clutch pack is worn out. More often than not, shifting or slippage problems are caused by the accumulation of dirt in the valve body.
Lastly, the Maxima tranny has a solenoid pack and controll unit. These do develop problems. So test the obvious, and do a fluid change. Then see where it's at.

I'm sure you are right, but I always try to give advice based on the least expensive option first. You really don't know. It could be the fluid, as I found out on my mom's car. Or it could be a solenoid on the tranny. But the last thing I'd do is take it without trying the cheap and obvious first.
Most shops will ALWAYS tell you that you need a new/rebuilt transmission. Remember, that's a high profit job for them.

As far as using the TCI kit, that's probably a good idea. The flaw in the civic transmission is one of the clutch pack holders. It's too thin and eventually cracks. Then it begins to slip like this on the video. That's a known issue, but of course Honda will never admit to it. The only good fix is to replace the part with a re-designed part. This is available. If Honda does it, you will get the same original part more than likely, and be back here in a year or so.

Good luck. Let us know how it turns out.
