exhaust gasket question

i have an EVO2 exhaust is its leaking where the midpipe and the axel back is connected. I bought a brand new greddy gasket and on one side it's completely FLAT and the other side is kind of angled out a bit. My question is that does the gasket need to be placed on the exhaust a certain way or anythign to prevent leakage? like does the flat part of the gasket have to face a certain side? basically is there a wrong way to put on a gasket. thanks for all your help guys.

EM2jdm is an unknown quantity at this point
You should be able to use both sides of the gasket, I have that same problem on my Evo2 but I looked at it and noticed that the flange on my exhaust was sort of curved and caused it to leak

i had this muffler shop just bolt it up and the leakage stop for the moment, but sometime it still LEAKS very very very little on the bottom of the flange. Enough where i can see the gasket getting wet at one little spot. this is frustrating...

I have the exact same problem. Just tightened it up today, but still leaks. Any solutions? My gasket, I found, is broken towards the bottom side, so I turned it so that the broken part is on top, yet still a problem.

is it a donut gasket or a flat paper-ish gasket?

yeah, i even bought the GREDDY exhaust gasket for freaking 12 bucks ( waste of money) and my exhaust jsut started to leak again at the same dam spot. I just think its the exhaust shop that doen'st put it on right. I'll try to buy another one later and put it on myself again and this time i'll use a breaker bar to tighten the bolts.

ah, the flat paper-ish gasket.

it should hold up just fine ... I don't know why you guys are getting a leak ... is the leak pretty bad?

andy, you could get a gasket like that at pep boys ... just bring your old one in and compare it to the ones they have, it should be fine ...

if you're still having trouble, let me know and I'll take a look at it

I'm getting an air leak, and some water goes through, too.

Thanks derek, I'll try to fix it and we'll see. I really don't think the pipes are warped, but it could be the case.

I don't have a torque wrench, but I tightened it as much as I possibly could. Could that be the reason, that the bolts aren't torqued down?

nah ... torque wrench won't matter for that. But yeah, tighten as much as you can ... I hope you're not using the honda spring bolts on it ...

Spring bolts? On the axleback? I just have the bolts that we used when we put it on together.

ah, nevermind then. they -should- be okay ... again, unless the flanges are un-even, then stuff will leak out.

Yep, that's the plan now. I just couldn't make it last night to Pep Boys before they closed.
