banging sound from the back passenger side

every once in a while i get a loud bang that comes from the back on the car, almost always on the passenger side (heard it one time from the driver side) it sounds like a rock hitting the side of the car, but theres never any mark, plus i have splash guards. since the sound always sounds the same, im wondering if its something loose somewhere. theres no pattern to when it happens though, so i cant figure out what it is

Anything loose in the trunk? Could be a strut going bad. When does it happen? i.e. over bumbs Next time try to remember when and how it happens then try to mimmick and loacte it from there. Hard to indentify when decription is vague, sorry.

It could even be a rock, just because you have mud flaps doesn't guarantee you won't have anything fly off the tire and hit the car.

Ya, I get that once in a while too, rear passenger side... sounds a like a big rock hitting the outside rear fender or the inside wheel well, but there's never any mark... and it happens on totally clean streets too. Very bizarre, but probably nothing to worry about.

youve definitely got the same thing as me ronin

it can happen anytime, anywhere, theres no pattern to it, doesnt happen in the same place twice. most of the times ive noticed it, its been over flat, clean road. i can think of a couple times when i heard it that the car hasnt been warmed up yet, and those times were at night, but i couldnt tell you if it ever happened when it was warmed up or during the day because i didnt take note of that when it happened

Are you sure it isn't this mysterious rear deck rattle that you hear so much about? I have a similar noise. It almost sounds like those old power antennas that used to kind of click when they were out of whack. You know what I mean? Mine just makes this random clunking sound and I don't have a single solitary thing in the trunk. The only thing I can gather is it has to do with the rear deck. Who knows...driving me nuts.

I've noticed it whenever i turn on the car drive and come to my first complete stop. (Stop sign at the end of my street)
and i thought it was something to do with the trannie. It might have something to do with the car being cold but i gotta
see if i notice it when the cars hot.

tkb.
