It's a syncro. They go bad for shifting to fast, power shifting, or not using your clutch properly. I'm not saying you are a bad drivier, but this is generally what I see, and Honda has had weak 3rd gear syncro for along time on their cars. So lots of times they just go bad without any help, but not shifting properly can cause them to go bad even faster.
You should start saving for a replacement tranny and maybe even start shopping around. You can replace the sycro, but generally a tranny rebuild is more than just getting a junkyard tranny. If you can get a later model tranny, like '04 or '05, I hear they had a little beefier sycros. I personally would drive the car until it completely fail, in the mean time saving for a new tranny, then replace it. Even without a syncro, you can drive the car by rev matching the gears and engine.

You are killing the sycnro on your 3rd gear. It takes time to let the syncro work, you're driving a civic with economy sycros, not an M3 with high end ones. When you shift fast you are not giving the sycro's enough time to "sync" the gear speeds and eating away your gear and putting undo stress on the sycro's.

I just hit 54k miles in my '04 vp and I think my 3rd gear syncro is going. I can be creepin through town and it's fine, but the moment I get into a high rpm she grinds everytime. If I let the rpms drop a little bit befor I shift I'm fine as well. It only grinds in a hig rpm. Does my guess sound correct?
thanks chris
