Spark Plugs: Iridium, Platinum or Copper?
Spark Plugs: Iridium, Platinum or Copper?
I know this question has been asked repeatedly on this site, as I've gone through countless threads about it, but I have yet to find a thread that difinitively gives the pros and cons of each type of plug.
Reading through the forumns I've found everything from praise for the iridiums to the fact that they may cause engine damage.
It would be neat if someone with the knowledge to comment on the types of sparkplugs wrote up a small blurb on the types of plugs available, and any recommendations (perhaps even discredit some myths).

I switched to Iridium plugs as well. The car DOES run a tad smoother, and I do see a slight gain in mileage. The platinums that came out still looked ok, but the car was starting to run a little rough. Honda claims that the plugs will last 110,000 miles. Yes they will, but they don't claim your car will run efficiently.
The stock platinums are fine. But the Iridiums are a little better. Price wise, if it's close, go for the idridiums. I got mine at $10 each. Cheaper than Honda.
I don't see how Iridiums can possibly cause engine damage in a stock engine. It's only a different electrode material. I would NOT use regular plugs, though. They are not meant for coil on plug ignition.

^^^wow, that's realy cheap.
DO NOT USE COPPER PLUGS, iriduim or platinum. Believe me, if Honda could put copper plugs in the car, they would have, but they didn't and neither should you.

At 15,000 miles, my stock spark plugs were black and some looked broken at the end. I did some research and found the Bosch platinum +4 is too rich for any car, but the Bosch platinum +2 will be just fine. Thats what I'm using and the car runs fine for me.

yea do not use copper. I fouled a set of those out after a day of driving. I tried iridium, didn't last more than 15k miles. Also they say its really bad to use them on a turbo car. I am sticking with stock double platinum as was told to me by numerous mechanics.

iridiums are good for turbo. you just have to find the right one thats "cold" enough. they have cold ratings on the iridium sites. they are good when you know what your doing. copper is not supposed to be in a civic cause stock is platinum. why go down a grade from stock? that don't make sense. the seperate ignition packs on each cylinder makes the spark way the hell hot for copper, and ok for platinum. i still like iridiums better. thats just me though.

you should only use copper if you have a turbo car. Whatever effect you're noticing with iridium isn't real. Maybe your old ones weren't torqued properly, or getting old. I didn't get any better gas mileage when I used em.

Gearbox, you are probably right. My plugs were getting tired. The car seems to run like the day I bought it now. Probably just as well as on stock platinums. But what the hey, I tried them. My point: The stock plugs really don't last nearly as long as Honda claims. Not if you want a smooth running car, anyway.

led foot no. I usually keep the rpms below 3k to get that 20 city. Just watch your plugs. Sooner or later you will feel the car performing worse and will have to put the stock back in.
