no reverse gear?
when i went to shoot pool, i backed out of the driveway and everything was fine. when i'm backing out of the pool hall, i put it in reverse and it just grindes. i get home, and it does the same thing. did i loose my reverse gear or something?? i won't loose all the others will i. by the way i just got a new clutch about 10,000 miles ago. and no other gears are affected. and i have a 5 speed.

yea same thing was happening with my buddy, but he had hydrolic, we have cable. His prob was the slave cylinder. What you can do to fix is b4 u turn on car, shift to the reverse and turn car on with it in there already.

Well, it sounds like this guy has real problems with reverse gear...don't know what to say. Have it looked at?
As for everyone else, I'd like to confirm that the reverse gear on our transmissions does seem pretty finnicky. I've found that this works every time, however...
If you shift to reverse and actually maintain a firm (not forceful) pull on the shifter as you release the clutch, you'll find that the spurs on the reverse gear will engage normally.
If you just shift, let go, and release the clutch, I'd say at least 1/3 of the time, you'll just grind away.

Honda does not put a syncro on the reverse gear for the civic, that's why most of you are grinding away. Buy doing what most people are saying, you are just meshing the reverse gear with the speed of the motor, which is what needs to be done.
Now on to your problem, does it ever go into reverse?
What kind of clutch did you have put in?
Was the tranny serviced?
Did the dealer put your clutch in or did a local garage do it?
Help me out with these and I'll see what I can do.

It's begining to look like your reverse is just simply gone though. Your best bet is probably going to be to get a used tranny put in. You can either get a junkyard tranny (which will be the cheapest) or get a rebuilt one (from someone like Jasper). If you have the money go for a rebuilt one, otherwise a junkyard.
To give you an idea of cost:
I looked up Jasper for a 2003 civic and it was 1449 (comes with 36 month, 76,000 warranty
This guy has an Ebay site and is offering a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty for less than $800 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/91-04...91621887QQrdZ1
An ebay tranny costs about 250-300 (I'm thinking a junkyard one should be about the same)
There also some junkyards by me that will sell you a tranny or motor with a small warranty, like they warranty it will start and run, that is what I would look for.
If you want a garage to do it, call as many as possible, try to find a place that specializes in tranny's, and always ask what kind of warranty it comes with and what they do if the tranny they put in is bad.
Also, does anybody know if all the trannies in the 7thgens are the same?

Well, you can ask, but generally to pull apart a tranny and rebuild it will cost more than simply replacing it. And IMO, a rebuilt tranny is never quite right unless you pay big $$$ and have it done by a very well known company. I mean it can done, sometimes it's cheaper, but generally speaking your reverse went bad for a reason, if they don't find and fix that reason, you might just end up replacing naother and another. On, maybe it was just a bad gear.
