Does anyone's car do this?
When my car is off or just idling in neutral, i can easily put the shifter into a gear without holding down the clutch. Is that normal for our cars? If not i'm gonna go take it into HOnda to have them check it out.

<< i know you can do it with the car off. how did you find out it does this? it's an odd thing to try >>
Heh, well my friend was sitting in the passenger seat while the car was off and was playing with the shifter (he doesn't know much about manual cars). Once i saw him shifting with no problems i got a little confused.
This is what I know from experience...
When I first got my car, I didn't know sh't about using a 5-speed. I tried moving the car to a gear WITHOUT pushing down the clutch (after starting it) and I got the most annoying sound a new car could make. It doesn't sound... right. If the engine is on, and you put it to a gear, isn't the car gonna try to move? (Let alone stall.) I don't get it. I don't have my car with me now to really confirm it. Just... go to the dealer and show the service department (unless someone here can make some sense of it.)

Ahh, memories. I remember the first day I crunched a gear. The summer of '94

If the engine is off, sometimes you can shift through gears without depressing the clutch if the gears are properly aligned as easy as if you were shifting normally, if they aren't you'll notice they can't get into place, so don't force it into gear. If the engine is running, and do it without depressing the clutch, you'll grind the gears and the engine may stall.

i disagree with ya cuz i can do it wit the car on while im driving its and old trick all u got to do is catch the gear change want the revs are going down its difficult to do but one u got it it works for emergencies {like ur clutch messing up or not grabbing}
but wat i do agree is that i daubt you can switch will the car is on idle
so he should get it checked
as far as the car being off
that is natural all standards do it the trans is not spinnin so the clutch is not going to fight it and it would go rite in
if anybody has a question im me

with the car off you can shift all you want it doesnt matter if the clutch is in or out, the reason is there is nothing moving in the trani other then the shift forks....the gears dont move with the car off so it wont hurt anything!

It is possible to shift through all your gears and not use the clutch without hurting the car. You just have to know your car's dynamics and the like...VERY hard to do. And some people when they race don't use the clutch at all...

i have shifted without using the clutch before.....i learned that trick a long time ago. you cant force it in you just have to push slightly up until it grabs...at least thats how i got it to work. and if your car is off yes you can shift between gears. if you go to the dealer they are gonna laugh at you and take your money for "looking" at it

It sounds like the clutch is adjusted wrong, only problem with that is we don't have a cable clutch. Something may be binding, take it is asap.
Shifting without the clutch is speed shifting(engine running). It is all a matter of getting the synchros to match up at certain RPM's. Motorcycles and F1 cars have such close gear ratios that they don't need the use of a clutch after 1st. I wouldn't recommend doing this too often, for the result may be a few broken teeth on your gears.
