engine noise in '05 Civic LX

I just developed what sounds like lifter noise, but only when at idle. Give it a good rev and when it comes back to idle it will stop for about 15 seconds and then comes back. Shut the car off and immediately start it back up and it won't be there. Will eventually fade back in though. I only have 7,400 miles on this thing and it's already noisier than my '97 Neon with 160,000 on the odometer. So much for Honda quality that I have heard so much about. This is my first Honda and I am not impressed.

I am running Mobil 1 0w20 and change it every 4,000 miles or so. I plan on having a UOA done when I reach 10,000 miles to see how the engine is wearing but I want to wait till it's good and broke in first.

So, have any of you encountered a similar noise?

Thanks
Paul

0w20, why the hell are you using that? Use 5 at the least. I use mobil 1 10w30.
Change your oil, and try that out. You didnt even need an oil change yet. Your on crack, IMO. I believe you can wait til 10,000 for the first one, since they put an additive or something in the first oil on the lot. It is supposed to be really good for our cars. This is what I hear. but try a different oil. mobil1 10w30. DO IT! Any feedback people? Am I correct or not?

lol....I am not waiting 10,000 miles to do a first oil change. Leaving a break in oil in that long with that dinky oil filter is crazy. Go to your Honda dealer and ask for a synthetic oil for your Civic...they will either give you Honda 0w20 (rebadged Mobil 1 0w20) or Mobil 1 0w20.

Mobil 1 0w20 is the correct Mobil 1 oil for our cars. Especially since I see you're from Wisconsin. Maybe in Arizona you could get away with 10w30, but when ambient temperatures get below freezing you sure as hell don't want something that thick in there. I've run M1 0w20 for 25k of my 40k miles, and couldn't be happier. My car ticks, but it always has, and I'm told it's the fuel injectors, not lifters.

I have that very faint "tick-tick" from the injectors too, but the noise I am hearing is louder than that and it doesn't do it all the time, just at idle some of the time. It seems the worst when the car is in between the cold stage and the fully warm stage. I slowly rev it up and it doesn't get any worse. Like I said though, if I rev it quickly to like 3,000 rpms, when it comes back to idle it will be quiet again...for like 10-15 seconds.

i THINK i know what sound that is and mine makes the same when it's fully warm, it's a bunch of "tick-tick-ticks" right? I have an 04 LX and have NO IDEA what that is, I've actually been getting that noise since i got the car but never thought it was a big deal cept that it's louder than others haha

Well, it may be normal... but that doesn't make it right. I'd take it in, but my local Honda dealer isn't open 24 hours so I don't know when I'll get a chance to take it in. Last time I checked with them they had a the week full of appointments. Is it just me or does it worry any body else that a big dealership has a week full of Hondas that need repairing.

yep, welcome to the wonderful world of dealerships

anything short of a transmission falling out or a piston shooting through the hood may be considered 'normal' by most dealerships.

that's a good point... dealerships, at least Honda ones, blow... when I took my car in because it wouldn't shift into 1st or 3rd they told me nothing was wrong. They had the guy who worked on it out to show me how to drive because they said I just didn't know how to use a manual (I've been driving manuals for over 6 years now). While he was "showing me how to shift" it wouldn't let him into 3rd either. F*ck Honda dealerships and the horse they rode in on!!!

It's Buena Park Honda in Southern California. Their actual dealers have always been really nice and helpful. It's just the service department that blows... and I'm not the only one I know of that's had that kind of experience.
