noise on right turns...

Every time I make a right turn, I hear a noise that sounds like metal on metal. I hear it more if there are bumps in the road. My car also seems like it's leaning a little to the left. I am 295lbs, so i expect it to lean a little, but it might be related.

Any ideas on what this could be?

Whoa! I have the exact same problem, but a little different than you. I hear the same noise, medal on medal when turning right....but it ONLY happens when i'm in 2nd gear (5-speed) and turning right, and only when stepping on the gas. I took it to my dealer and they said it was the right axle. They ordered the part and i'm getting it "fixed" sometime this week. So yeah, have you taken yours to ur dealer or anything and have them look at it?

.....as for the leaning....maybe your eyes are just fooling you. I can remember so many times that my car seemed that way too.

Angry Argh!!!!!

Got my car back today from my honda dealership. They handed the keys and said it was "fixed". Got a minute down the road and took a right turn in 2nd gear and WHAT DO I HEAR!!!!! The same ****!!!! Fixed my butt. So evidentally it wasn't the right axle, so what the heck could it possibly be!? Only makes a bad grinding medal on medal sound when turning right and ONLY in 2nd gear! Never do i hear it turning right in 1st, 3rd, 4th, or 5th!!

I had the same problem, there is a technical service bulletin from Honda. I have the TSB saved I can e-mail you in you want it.

If your car is under warrenty take it to Honda and tell them about the service bulletin. They will replace the first and second gear including the sychros and the reverse idler gear. I guess from what they told me its the reverse idler gear knocking against the housing of the trans.

Well if the sound is coming from the Front Right side ... when turning .. it could be the strut is blown ... especially since some of the front MacPherson struts are faulty especially in the 01 year and some of the 02 year.

From my understanding of your description I think the above would be the obvious problem. But you didnt really go into explaining where the "metal on metal" sound was coming from ... I can only assume you mean from the Front Right Side.

It's really hard to tell exactly where it's coming from. It only happend when turning right, so ur attention is drawn to that. It kinda may be coming from the tranny, but it's hard to tell. So i'm thinking somewhere between the tranny and the right tire, haha, sorry if that didn't help much

Well I am guessin that since you have the Tien Springs .. so your car is lowered ... and you didn't mention in your profile that you changed your struts ... My best guess would be the strut is gone.

I mean tranny ... I'd say if you had like 120 000 miles ... ok I can understand. Same for axle.
But I am just thinking most probable problem with a lowered car on stock struts ... that theres the problem.

Although you say it leans left ... which could be another clue as to the Front Left Strut being blown (even before I was thinking the Front Right - I now change to Front Left).
When turning right ... most weight of car is placed on the Front Left strut. If your observations are right and it is leaning to the left .. you might be bang on.

I'd suggest Tokico Blue's for basic strut swap.

If that in fact is the problem ... go to a garage and get it check'd out ... Post up the solution to the problem ... k it will be a good learning experience.

It has nothing to do with my tein springs. I just got my springs on the day before yesterday. And even before that it was still making the same noises on the stock springs. I'm taking my car back to the dealership tomorrow. I'd do it today but i'm in college til' 2:30 today and have to work from 3-10. But i'll do my best to keep everything posted. But i'm starting to lean more towards what what bogus1 said about the 1st and 2nd gear sychros. If it was the axle or even the strut, wouldn't you think it would make that noise in all gears when turning right?? When i turn right now in the right speed for 2nd gear, i push in the clutch and turn right in no gear. Then take the same turn IN 2nd gear and *tick tick tick grind grind tick*

hmm not sure. We'll keep us posted on the results.

Just for your sake .. bring the reciept of when the springs were installed .. just in case they try to blame it on the lowering that caused the problem. Although I hope you get a nice guy cause they can be real bit(hes sometimes.

K, today i dropped my civic off back at the dealership. Had another mechanic ride and i showed him what was wrong. Went through a right turn in 1st....no noise...went through a right turn in 2nd......(grinding)...and so forth with it being in nothing else but 2nd. I'm starting to believe these people are really *ucking stupid, cuz the guy wanted to tell me it was exhaust rattle, then he wanted to tell me he was clueless. Ugh, whatever. Plus they supposily "fixed" my dad's 04 accord (had a rattle in the door). Well, they replaced a seat belt harness. Ummm...okay why the hell replace a seat belt thing when the buzzing's in the damn door!! Another long story short, they didn't fix that either. Anyways, left the vic there overnight and they're gonna put it up in the air tomorrow and check everything out. I'm not feeling too confident in them but i do hope they come somewhat close to whatever i've been cursed with. If you come to north carolina....stay away from wayne county. I swear, this town makes you dumb.

No, there is a TSB on this, I have an 02 Civic EX M/T. Everytime I turned right and was in second gear I heard a knock, more of a "tick-tick" sound. I looked it up online and found the TSB. I printed it out and brought it to the dealer. They looked it up and found out that it was the "reverse lock-out arm" (I could be wrong with the exact name)... basically it was an arm that prevents you from going into reverse while driving forward. He said it comes loose and when you turn right in second gear gravity pulls it to the left and hits the gears that are spinning. The guy said it is nothing that with ever harm your transmission, but it does get really annoying. It was covered under warranty for me and should be for anyone if it's in the TSB for your year. The only thing is TSB's are NOT recalls. Dealers don't have to fix TSB's under warranty, it's up to them, but with recalls they have to by law. They had to drop the tranmission though in order to work on it. It took them 2 or 3 days to fix everything. That was it though, as soon as I turned out of the dealer I tested it... no knock! So take it back after you print this out...

and show them number 16...

Hope this helps!

K, my bad. Anyways, the dealership said they'd fix what the TSB said. They weren't too clear on what they were fixing so i just had to kinda go off what i thought it was and what others on here thought it was. But yeah, i drop my car off tuesday for them to fix the reverse gear lock out thingy. Thanks anyways. Keep ya posted when i get my car back after they work on it

I found out what it was...

Broken driverside sway bar end link. $15 for replacement part.

I also threw down 625 on some Tokicos and Tien springs though
