So I bought a 2012 Si coupe(manual) and it was making a whole lot of racket and throwing a P2646 code. Turns out it was rod knock. Cylinder 2 bearing spun
I bought replacement rod bearings. Installed them along with water pump, thermostat, idler pulley, belt, spark plugs, VTEC spool valve, misc. Orings got everything back together and now it's making this ticking noise.
Problems I noticed is
1. The car also does feel sluggish under acceleration 2. Rpm fluctuating at start up( which I'm guessing I need to do the idle learn procedure) 3. The ticking noise, seems more audible under load and gets faster with RPM
Could it need valve adjustment? Or VTC actuator? No CEL or codes being thrown

Re: Attempting to revive 2012 Si, ticking noise
Could just need a valve adjustment. But more likely when it ate the bearing it sent a bunch of crap through the oil system and damaged other components.

I did a pretty decent job of cleaning all the scrap from the oil pan, oil pump and checked for cylinder scoring and inspected the head for any trash. so im hoping not. The pistons dont seem to have any play on them
Cylinder 2 had a little scoring but nothing drastic. Ill take a look at the valves next.
The only real noise a bad VTC actuator will make it a rattle on startup. It just won't build oil pressure before cold start. My '09 TSX had the (more or less) same K24Z. That sounds like more than a valve adjustment to me, though. Something sounds broken. I'm guessing it still has low oil pressure, either way.
Unless the valves are WAY out of adjustment, you shouldn't really see much difference in performance. I first did my valves at 150k-ish and they were slightly out of adjustment. First time I did them, they were really loose and ticked a bit, but no notable loss of performance. Certainly wasn't sluggish, anyway. A valve adjustment certainly wouldn't hurt but I don't see that being the only problem, if at all.
I'd consider doing a Blackstone oil analysis if you have any interest in keeping this car long-term. That'll give you good insight into the health of the engine.
if you are just going to run at idle, you can run the engine without the valve cover.
but if you rev too much, it will spill oil everywhere. just do adjustment, wrap engine top with newspaper and adhesive tape and start the engine to see if it is just adjustment. (you will save one gasket by doing this, might even find out what is making the noise)
