Swapping engines 1.8l - crankshaft position sensor question [solved]

So I'm replacing the 1.8l in my 2012 LE. I picked up a new(er) JDM 1.8l that was supposed to be from a 2012 Civic. So I got the old engine pulled and I was starting the process of swapping the wiring harness and I found that the crankshaft position sensor on the new engine is on the front side (radiator side) not on the back side (axle side) like it is on the original engine. Am I safe to just extend the leads or is the crankshaft sensor being in a different location going to cause an issue?

Is there a spot you could mount the old sensor on the new engine?

I wish, then it wouldn't be an issue.

I would like to think you could just extend that breakout and connect them but I have no way to verify. I don't have a pinout for either one to confirm they are the same.

in other words, do the connector to the wiring works? or are they different?

The crankshaft position sensors are VERY similar, but they are not exactly the same. the guide 'fins' on the top are spaced differently. The new(er) engine looks like it probably a 2010-2011. I'm guessing for 2012 they moved the sensor to the back side of the engine to protect it from road debris. The 2010-11 engine had a rubber boot over it for protection while the 2012 engine does not, but it does have a shield over it.

So my really big concern is if the crankshaft trigger ring is different between the two engines. If they are different and they take into account the different sensor location, then I am probably fine. If they are the same, then the sensor would be thinking that the crankshaft is in the wrong position.

re: Swapping engines 1.8l - crankshaft position sensor question [solved]

So after a lot of research I was able to determin that the crankshaft trigger ring is significantly different between the 2011 and 2012 civic 1.8l engine. So hopefully the company that I bought the engine will do the right thing and get me the right engine since it was their mistake.

This is the crankshaft trigger ring on the 2012

This is the crankshaft trigger ring on the 2010-11
