i use the spray on tire cleaner/wet look stuff... spray it on and let it sit... hoses look shiny and new and cleans everything else too... i heard about it from a customer and didnt believe it until i tried it...
Gunk engine cleaner works pretty good too... but nothing beats cleaning your engine bay with a rag... haha takes tons of time but looks good....

You shouldn't have to worry about getting anything wet, I've washed mine with an extremely high powered pressure washer and I haven't experienced any problems.
I use the soap and water and put a cloth over my air filter and scrub it with the same sponge as the outside of my car, after it dries i use CD2 engine detailer, its a spray can of stuff that blackens all your hoses and wires and makes all the metal shine...looks really good and i do it when ever i wash my car, every other week or so..
id try to steer clear of gunk engine cleaners. in the past theyve staind black parts in my old car engine bays, others have had similar results. i have heard good things about simple green from many people, so thats what i plan on trying when my engine gets filthy
CD2 makes a 'kit' of two cans.. one is a degreaser and one is a detailer.. there is a procedure for warming the engine, proper drying, etc that you should follow EXACTLY and if done right will provide AMAZING results.. better than any of the above methods (sorry, i've tried em all before, and detail cars so trust me
)
here's an 82k miles, daily driven, non-garaged vehicle (trashed out before 52k when i bought it).. done with CD2... it leaves your parts degreased the best (the engine warming/cooling is essential to 'loosening' some of the grime) and the hoses the blackest for the longest period of time... one thing i did was also to take a rag afterwards and wipe down the 'too wet' spots of detailer on the final step... the CD2 is available at my oreillys around me for about $7 for the kit of two cans.. i always have several on hand for myself

My dealership uses them as well to cover the steering wheel when the mechanics drive it.
u might not want to use armor-all if your location got high amount of pollen..
my location got tons of pollens....and i cleaned the plastic on my engine bay with armor-all....soon after, when i opened my engine bar, the plastic was cowered with pollens.......f*ck.......

air filter battery and alternator are the things you want to cover and mabye a few of the sensors if your going to do it but you don't have to aslong as you don't dislodge anything (ie o2 sensors) when you spray it and let it dry fully your good. I personally do the wet rag method and it looks pretty nice. I go over the plastic with a bit of armorall protectant wipes to keep the fuzz dust from sticking to it. Nothing you can do about mucky muddy dirt that somehow gets up there though
doesnt seem like it would matter much to hit the engine with water as long as you let it all dry. Assuming its the same, on my dirtbike i just wash everything down and it runs fine. I have a 98 car and the top of the engine looks like it has some buildup or something, is there any way to get that off and make it look halfway decent? Thanks for whoever said tire shine will work for making it look nicer.
