Clunking noise is driving me crazy!

I’m getting a front end clunk. When going slow and hitting a bump. Like turning into my driveway when I hit the curb. I’ve got brand new sway bar end links, new complete strut assemblies including top strut mounts. New lower control arms. My tie rods are good and have no play. New wheel bearings. I don’t know what it could be. All the engine and tranny mounts seem solid.

[EDIT]

All parts new:
Strut assemblies
Lower control arms
Ball joints
Both CV axles
Wheel bearings
Sway bar end links
Front calipers/pads

Usually I'd say lower control arm bushings, but you meantioned new arms.

Perhaps the ball joints?

Ball joints are new too. I pretty much rebuilt the whole front end

I would have also guessed control arm bushings or engine mounts. Are you able to recreate the noise by rocking the car up/down and back/forth while parked? If so get a friend to help narrow down where the noise is coming from.

I once had a loose swap bar link nut that drove me crazy trying to track it down.

Two more wild guess possibilities.

Broken/loose subframe or subframe bolt.

Front suspension was not under load when everything got tightened up.

Maybe loose brake caliper(s)? Must be frustrating as you basically replaced most of the usual suspects.

I have taken a video to try to help track down the problem:

I cannot get it to make the metal clunk noise, however I can get it to make a rubber squeaking noise when rocking it side to side. Also while driving at low speeds it will make the noise if I turn the wheel side to side in a jerking motion.

I was thinking about the possibility of it being from not tightening the suspension under load. I may have to attempt to fix it like this!

I have checked the bolts and they are not loose or anything. It also doesn't make any noise or anything from braking so I'd probably rule this out.

I'm not able to recreate the metal clunk, but if I rock it sideways I get a rubber squeak noise.

I may have to try tightening the suspension under load, thanks!

Everythings tight there. No noises while braking either. And yes it is getting quite annoying lol

Re: Clunking noise is driving me crazy!

I had a similar issue when I installed aftermarket coilovers, with a top mount strut adapter in the wrong position.

I know you said they were new but

Perhaps check to see if the strut tower bolts are tight while the vehicle is on the ground (I've tightened them on jack stands before and then had to re tighten them on the ground).

If that's not it, you might have to pull the struts and inspect.

I have done this but I will try it again I want to try to torque everything to proper torque specs before I start buying more parts.

Cool Re: Clunking noise is driving me crazy!

I had a clunk on my 01 civic coming from the driver's side when accelerating from a stop and when heavy braking. The noise started right after I had the subframe out of the car when changing the transmission input shaft bearing. A year later, and after replacing nearly everything in the front end with no success, I finally found the issue. Apparently the subframe should be tightened with weight on the tires, not when jacked up. I loosened the 4 -17mm bolts holding it, let the car off the jack stands, then tightened them back up. Clunking is finally gone! Another thing I did was make sure the sway bar was aligned correctly, equal distance from the control arm on both sides – loosen the 2 bushing brackets and use a pry bar to wiggle it left or right as needed. Hopefully this helps someone before replacing everything like I did. I even paid a mechanic to diagnose the noise, he had me replacing parts unnecessarily. Cheers!
