Fluctuating idle.

Let me begin with I have no idea where to post this question. This a bit to it and it’s more than just idle issues.

Before I begin // I have a scanner tool and there is no CEL coming on and no codes coming up. (Yes I am f* sure that my CEL works) when I disconnect things such as the air cleaner or other sensors, the changes register. So dear god please don’t suggest that the CEL is just not working.

to begin, when I come to a stop sign or red light and I’m at a stop, I can hear my rpms move up and down but it doesn’t show on the gauge. It’s not sporadic either. It’s very consistent. It’s 1 second low - 1 second high (repeats until foot is off brake)

there is a fair amount of vibration as well but i believe that to be a result of almost 200k miles without a motor mount change.

Also, when my car gets warmed up it feels like I lose a good bit of pick up during acceleration and it’ll start to shake a little bit at around 60mph and goes away at about 70mph

i replaced my my crankshaft position sensor about two months ago (with a denso brand sensor) timing looked great while I was under there and the issue started some time after. I do not believe the issue to be related.

if the issue is stemming from my EGR or IAC Valve, would it register with a CEL?. it’s been happening for over 2 weeks now so I imagine if there was a sensor to pick it up it would have by now.

any thoughts?

Side note while I have your attention: I’d like to put an exhaust header on and delete the cat. What kind of tuning (if any) will be necessary afterwards?

Re: Fluctuating idle.

Do not delete the cat, you will gain nothing.
IAC and EGR can be acting up without throwing codes. Yours sounds more like the IAC is acting up

I won’t gain anything at all with the exhaust header?

and do you know any way off hand of testing these IACs

You'll have a shiny part that makes more noise.

Try unplugging it with the engine running, see if anything changes. Also there's a port in the neck of the throttle body, cover that with your finger and see what happens. (engine needs to be running and ICA plugged in)
Take it apart and clean the hell out of it, see if it improves

Re: Fluctuating idle.

Lmao, I’ll take your word for it and opt out of the header.

I’ll **** around with the unplugged IAC tomorrow and report back.

checked my coolant earlier and I didn’t see any in the radiator and it’s too dark outside to see if there is any in the reservoir.

something else that I’ve noticed since I bought the car is that the oil ****ing disappears fast. No smoke from tailpipe, zero oil spots in driveway, and every time I top her off it’s always relatively clean oil (for oil) no milky discoloration or anything of that nature.

I can’t remember the last time I checked the coolant though, any ideas on that?

Re: Fluctuating idle.

Check to make sure it's not getting pushed into the reservoir.
The cat will eat alot of smoke, it is probably burning. The oil rings get all junked up over time

Re: Fluctuating idle.

oh, boy, breached headgasket can cause idle variations.

test method - in these engines the coolant does not go to the oil, the exhaust goes into the coolant and pushes it out of the reservoir

https://www.civicforums.com/forums/3...reference.html

just for info:
  1. CAT delete will cause a CEL, unless you make some changes
  2. A header alone will not make much at all and no CAT and header will likely make the lower RPM torque drop considerably
  3. The stock ECU can adjust enough for intake/exhaust and even a crower stage1 camshaft (discontinued, D17A/D17A2 only.)

Re: Fluctuating idle.

I put a DC Sport cat delete header and Magnaflow catback exhaust on my '02 back in early 2015. So many regrets. Annoyingly loud, sounded like garbage from outside the car, didn't notice any performance increase.

Re: Fluctuating idle.

alrighty, now I’m a little more confused.

no coolant in reservoir.
low coolant radiator.
passenger side floor is soaked, I’m 1000% sure that it’s water and not coolant.

Re: Fluctuating idle.

Get some coolant in that thing and find out if there's a leak. If you're sure what you found inside isn't coolant than there must be a leak somewhere else.

Re: Fluctuating idle.

Well forgive my ignorance, friends. I assumed there was no coolant in the radiator and I was wrong. As soon as I started pouring antifreeze in (and I mean like IMMEDIATELY) It was visible from the cap. It took less half an ounce before it where it should be.

however the reservoir was completely empty and I don’t think I’ve ever checked it before but I filled that up to just above the minimum line.

also looking through my papers from the previous owner, the windshield had been replaced and I believe that’s where the water on the passenger side floor is coming from.

so back to this idle issue and loss of power. Could it be that I did not replace the camshaft sensor when I replaced the crankshaft sensor?

is there anything you guys can think of that could contribute to the situation and not cause a CEL to come on ?
