Poor Idle [solved]
Hi there, my car has a pretty poor idle, it will sit around 1000 rpm after just starting and then drop to 800 after a minute, but as soon as i put in gear the idle drops to about 500 and the car shakes a bit, and after its been in gear it will continue to idle at 500 rpm even when in neutral, which I thought was strange. it also seems like it knows what the correct idle should be because when driving and I let off the clutch the idle drops to 800, then to about 200-300rpm (so very nearly stalling) then it jumps quickly back up to 500, this happens every time I let off the throttle and go into neutral / apply the clutch. I did my first "big" job on the car when I adjusted the valve lash, hoping that this would improve the idle speed and the valve clacking noise coming from the engine (it has 112,000 miles on it), it did neither and to be honest I probably tightened the valves a bit too much as it may have made the problem ever so slightly worse, although I'm not sure. The next thing on my list is to clean my idle control valve, but first I have to find it hahaha. any ideas?

after re doing my valve lash (intake side was too loose as i didnt have the exact correct feeler gauge) and giving my throttle body and idle air control valve a good clean, and then doing the idle relearn, my car idles at about 725rpm which is pretty much bang on what it says on the hood. very happy!
