Droning sound from rebuilt manual trans
Hey guys, recently finished my transmission rebuild, all new synchros and bearings (including diff bearings). Used all OEM NTN Japanese stuff. Filled up with Honda manual fluid. After about 4,000 miles there’s a droning sound from what seems like the diff. Doesn’t change with rpm’s. Hums higher and louder the faster you go. Sounds like metal on metal, or bad bearing? What do you guys think?
I also will be checking fluid levels soon to make sure I don’t have a leak

I’ll check and let you know.
what’s the best way to go about that? Just open the fill bolt and add and see if it drips out right away? With car level?

Checked fluid level. Seemed fine. Topped off and it started dripping out immediately. But I did notice that my passenger cv axle is flinging grease everywhere. I cut the inner (trans side) rubber boot when I beat it into place. If it’s losing grease, could that be my drone? I even feel the vibrations when braking??

Right. I could have. Kind of a relief. I can do a cv axle. Trans would need to be pulled for anything else. I’ll try that
Re: Droning sound from rebuilt manual trans
No, I’m meaning you probably damaged the splines in the transmission. Well, probably both axle and trans, but more emphasis on the trans.

Oof. I hope not. I had to beat it into there with a dead blow. Seated fine and didn’t hear anything for 4,000 miles.
if that’s what happened it would be the splines in the diff?

I’ve never had to completely force an axle in. Is this the first one you’ve done? There is supposed to be some movement when it’s installed; perhaps you thought it wasn’t in fully?
Differentials are built into the transmissions in fwd so I guess the terminology could be interchangeable.

Yes it is my first. It wouldn’t snap in at first, so I used a 1/2” breaker bar to beat against the inner cylinder (hence the cut boot) with a hammer. It finally went in and I could turn it with my hands about a quarter turn either way. Seemed fine
maybe the inner knuckle of the cv is bad? Loss of grease?

Uhhh, more detail on that. Front of the car in the air, transmission in a gear. If you turn one side 1/4 turn the other side should spin the opposite direction ~1/4 turn. There will be a little bit of slop but no where near 1/4 turn.

Re: Droning sound from rebuilt manual trans
not the whole tire, just the cv axle. Maybe not quite a 1/4 turn.
