02 d17 Won't shift into second. New clutch, new syncros
Won't shift into second. New clutch, new syncros. All other gears are perfect. My buddy sold me his Honda very cheap. The motor is fresh, and the tranny just had a rebuild. Included pretty much everything except the actual gears themself. I'm at a loss for words with this thing. Is it possible that the cables are jammed? Or the gear selector is messed up? All other gears shift in and out like butter. Clutch is basically brand new. And for some reason when you try to shift into second with the car running or not, the shifter feels like it's hitting a wall. It just stuffs itself and goes nowhere. I'd love to figure this thing out because it's a good car. Low miles. And even has some work done to the motor. Now I do know the kid that had it beat on it. So could something have bent? Should I unhook the shifter cable from the transmission and see if the shifter still won't shift into second ? I'm assuming if I go to shift Into second without the cable hooked up and it still doesn't sink Into second gear then the cable is jammed up and it's just a cable. Idk. I just don't know. Any help is appreciated. It just feels to me like this is a simple and stupid problem that got overlooked by this kid. And myself as well lok

Also pull the shift boot up and visually look at the ball at the bottom of the shifter. as you try to move shifter into second. If you observe the ball has a crack in it sort that out also.
Re: 02 d17 Won't shift into second. New clutch, new syncros
So I tore the center console apart. The shift ball is slightly split at the seem. Nothing horrible though. Shifter still moves all around smoothly. I guess that could be a good excuse to get a short shifter set up. But it's pointless really. It's only a d17. But could that actually prevent s cond gear from working right? Also. I unhooked the cable from the trans. Shift moves through the gears fine. Bled the clutch. I've noticed that the entire bottom row of the shifter seems hard to sync into gear. It does shift into 4th and into reverse but it's tough. I gotta muscle it into gear. And also, when I hold the shifter down in second it works. I took it down the road and ran through all the gears three times and had to physically hold the shifter down in second gear except for once. Once it stayed in gear. Welp. Idk. I guess I'll buy a new shift cable, and go to a scrap yard and buy a shift ball assembly out of an 03-05 Civic that isn't split at the seem. Mines an 02 but In 01 and 02 that ball always splits. The problem was addressed properly in 03. And if the new cable and shift ball assembly doesn't work then I'll just get full coverage insurance on her and wrap it around a tree 🤔
