Hi, gotta a problem, car won't shift into 5th or reverse.
Where do I check first, has something come lose on the shift linkage, or do I have a problem with the cable in the shifter.
Any idea where to start to figure this out would be appreciated, I have a 2004 civic sedan.

I got a feeling this is not a common problem, it came on real sudden, jumped into the car and I can't shift into reverse.
I am driving down the road (after I push my car out of a parking spot in a howling blizzard), I shift into fifth it won't stay, it simply pops out, bizarre.
If know idea's surface here it looks like I off to the local honda stealer.
If any thoughts on this thanks in advance.

If you are somewhere that you need reverse, try shifting into reverse before you start the car. You can also hold it in position and slowly let the clutch out slowly while applying light pressure to the shifter and if its something with the syncros then, when the gear teeth line up with the sleeve teeth due to the motor spinning the tranny it will go into gear. Usually 5th and the reverse idler gear share the same sleeve which is why you lost both. Try getting the car into gear and see if it transmits power when you release the clutch.

Yup, it true my transmissionis toast, I am told by the dealer its the bearings. He would not even give me the price of a rebuild on this trany (scary cost).
They told me to put in a used transmission, which is the way I will go.
Crap, it's a 04 with 65,00 km's on it, I am guessing that the car has had a harder life than I knew.
No hidden warranty on this.

Um, yea id most def get a second opinion if they are telling you that your 5th/rev is due to a bearing. If its a bearing, 9 times out of 10 you will hear that in all gears.

The funny thing is I can't hear any bearing wine, trany is quite.
There was no warning, suddenly I am locked out of reverse and it won't stay in 5th, crazy.
