Car turns on, but does not rev up. Engine light is on.

I was entering the highway, got up to around 4-5k rpm. Then my car started to die out. I was pressing the gas pedal and the rpm wasn't going up and my speed just keep decreasing. I had to pull over because my car didn't go. Whenever I put it in neutral I can rev my car up no problem. When I switch to a gear or reverse it seems there's no power. I think it may be my transmission but it may be the shifter. My car is automatic trans. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Sounds to me like a transmission problem.
