Is my clutch gone?
Hey guys, new to posting but always use this site for info.
While I driving home today I tried to switch to 3rd and it wouldnt go in gear. I tried to switch to 2nd and that wouldnt go in gear either. I pulled in a parking lot and got my friend to help me push my car home.
This is whats happening.
I can still turn the car on in neutral. If i try to get into a gear while the car is on, it won't go in. If the car is off, the gears slide in flawlessly. I started the car in gear with the clutch engaged and I hear a VERY loud winding noise. It seems to be coming from the clutch.
My car is a 02 civic with 101k miles and has a stock clutch. Is it most likely time for replacement? Are these the symptoms? If so where and what clutch should i be looking for? What clutches better than others? Pricing matters also.
Is installing this a problem? Moderate experience with both parties who would be working on it. 1 of which has already put a clutch in on a same year and model car with help from someone else.

Re: Is my clutch gone?
did you check your fluid level under the hood? Your clutch runs off hydraulic pressure, if the fluid is low you may have these symptoms. Otherwise, with the car off and e-brake set put it in 4th gear. Start the car and slowly let the clutch out, the car should die almost immediately if your clutch is good.
Re: Is my clutch gone?
Be careful though with reds suggestion. I had a clutch go out on my old prelude, with the same symptoms as yours, and starting it in gear with or without the clutch pedal to the ground would result in the car leaping forward and taking off on its own. I knew it was junk time for that car, so i drove it like that forcing the stick between gears in its "sweet spot", and yanking the stick to neutral before stopping. Then turning the car off, starting it in first gear to take off, and repeating at every stop.
Re: Is my clutch gone?
which fluid would i be looking to check? My oil? I am do for an oil change but i wasnt gonna do one till after the swap of my clutch. but if thats the problem then ill do that first.
Excuse me if my post is completely no where near the question i should be asking. Noob here.
FLuid? Which fluid?

Re: Is my clutch gone?
I started my car in 4th. E brake pulled and let go of clutch. Car Died.
The sound coming from my car while i did that is the loudest noise ive ever heard from my car and it seems to be coming from the clutch. The fluid also seems to be filled to the top. Will flushing(if possible) the fluid out and replacing it possibly fix my problem?

Re: Is my clutch gone?
Strange, those symptoms arent really the symptons of a "worn" clutch. I'd check your fliud first and then check the master and slave clutch cylinders and make sure they are okay. If your clutch was worn then you should be able to physically get the car in gear, but the car would have no acceleration whatsover.
Re: Is my clutch gone?
It was the clutch. I also replaced the fly wheel while I was in there. If u hav ne questions about the replacement just message me. It was a pain in the ***, but I'm up and running again.
For anyone else reading this, would my gears become rougher after replacing my stock fly wheel with an 8lb aftermarket. And my clutch with a stage 1?

Gears won't be rougher, but your engagement won't be as smooth. The lightened flywheel has less rotating mass to absorb the shock of the drivetrain engagement. You probably also notice that you have to rev a little higher now to get a smooth transition from whoa to go.

My 2002 is doing this when going into reverse sometimes.
Sometimes it takes multiple attempts to get the gear to go in.. dunno if it's a clutch issue or what but it's kind of annoying.
155k miles on original clutch.

Any time there is a rough shift in ALL gears or irregular engagement of the clutch it is typically the master cylinder. It could also be the slave, the the master seems to be the weaker point. Check the clutch fluid level and the carpet under the clutch (if the master is leaking there is typically fluid on the carpet).
Re: Is my clutch gone?
I'm at 165,000 miles on the same clutch. When the car is cold, first and second don't seem to work. I step on the gas and I don't get any acceleration. I've noticed a couple on times that stepping on the gas and the engine doesn't rev, but sometimes it does rev when in first and second. After about a minute, it all goes back to normal and I get full acceleration. The symptom was a dangerous problem for me a few times, when I was going to pull out into traffic, and stepping on the gas wouldn't accelerate me. In a panic, stepping on the clutch, putting the into neutral then back into gear got the car to go. But I could feel the car struggling. I've never added any fuel cleaner to the car and I'm thinking I may have a clogged fuel filter. Does that sound like the case also, besides the clutch?
