Input Shaft Bearing - How do I keep it from breaking...again?
Input Shaft Bearing - How do I keep it from breaking...again?
So my 05 coupe is in the shop right now getting a new input shaft bearing installed. I am glad I bought that extended warranty after all, since the tranny is being disassembled as I type (huge $$$ in shop labor). The scary thing is that my car only has 42K miles on it, so I do not understand how the bearing can be THAT fragile.
After a lot of reading and searching I have found that weak input shaft bearings are a known flaw of EM2 civics. I love my civic, but gimme a break: a complete tranny teardown is brought on by a bad input shaft bearing pre-45K miles?!?!?!?!
My question to anyone who may know is: how do I keep from having this same issue in the future? I plan on having this car for at least four more years, and I do NOT want to go through this whole thing again.
I do not race or rag out my car at all. I like to drive fast, but I do not slam through the gears by any means. I have been driving manual trans cars for 9 years, so I know how to work the clutch and I live in flat 'ol North Texas, so hills aren't an issue. No significant mods, just the usual bolt-ons (in my sig) Am I missing something?

Re: Input Shaft Bearing - How do I keep it from breaking...again?
I've had this diagnosis since July 2006 and 100k miles on my 02 Civic DX. I didn't get it repaired since they wanted to much $$$ to fix it. I'm now at 165k miles with the same symptom, noise when the clutch is out. That seems to be about only problem the broken input bearing does for me. I'd say, if it brakes again, just live with it.
