slight temperature fluctuations 2002 civic ex
Hi
So ill dive right into it. a week ago temp started to get hot Replaced thermostat because temp was rising but would lower, fan was intermittent and wouldnt turn on when temp gauge was rising but it did turn on i burped it replaced coolant sensor coolant switch as well, 10 months ago replaced water pump that crapped out on me. engine feels ever so slightly strained. dont have boiling radiator fluid no milky oil and no white exhaust. however now the temp gauge intermittently during idle or low speeds will rise from a little below middle then goes down to normal. temp gauge has never moved unless there was a problem. no leaks that i can see but i dont have a trained eye. only thing i havent replaced is the radiator.i dont know if im making an ant out of a mole hill or if there is something wrong. but i feel something is not quite right. talked to a friend who worked for honda for like 20 years he was like isnt that much fluctuation normal? but im use to my gauge never moving now when it does move it will be a few seconds after the fan turns on then it lowers to normal after the fan shuts off. during summer last year temp gauge never moved after i had the water pump replaced
Also engine will be a tad bit rougher on idle but that is intermittent too.

If you want to know for sure whether the cooling system is working properly, I would plug in a scanner and look at actual coolant temps. On mine, the gauge just reads "normal" and doesn't move unless the coolant temp drops below around 160 degrees or goes above 230 degrees. The stock gauge is hardly precise or accurate, it's not much better than an idiot light.
I have been using a Scangauge for the last 6+ years and on my 05 the coolant temp normally stays between 182 and 188 degrees while cruising. After idling for a while, the fans will come on at 207 degrees. As long as your temp is staying somewhere in that range, the heat works well, and the coolant stays full, you have nothing to worry about IMO.
Hope this helps!
