Coolant Overflow Tank Cap - Airtight or ?

Hello,

I have a 2004 Honda Civic LX with the 1.7 engine and I'd like to know if the cap to the coolant overflow tank is supposed to be seal up air tight when tightened down?\
I was checking the one out on my Honda today and when I turned it upside down (cap towards the grounds) coolant leak out around the cap threads.
Is that the way they work or do I need to get an o-ring for the cap or perhaps replace the overflow tank altogether?

Thanks,
Hondaleut

definitely not air tight. If something happened where the overflow got overpressurized and it was an airtight cap, that overflow tank would probably explode

huh, is tank full? If so, you have a blown headgasket and it is gonna start overheating in no time...

If you have coolant leaking out of y9our overflow tank, your headgasket is blown. Thats the telltale sign of a blown HG for this particular engine. Ask me how long it took me to find out before I found this forum.

Def sounds like a head gasket issue as coolant over flowing out of reservoir is a tell tale sign
