Just getting info from people to see if I'm panicking - timing belt [solved]
Has anyone here even though you're around 250,000 miles, never changed your timing belt (in this generation car). You still have the original belt.

After watching the videos on YouTube I kinda wanted to see if that was necessary. A lot of mechanicalizing going on. Must cost a fortune.

my eyes went wide when I read "250k on original timing belt"
it's like a $600-700 job at a shop/dealership. At least it was pre-covid

Timing belts are recommended to be replaced every 7 years or 100k miles; whichever comes first. You can probably understand why the others would be surprised at why you'd try to take one to 250k miles.

Don't you have a '05 Civic? 7th gen, not 8th gen. That's a belt. How sure are you it wasn't replaced around 100k miles? I think I've seen one go 150k miles before breaking.
Timing chains I wouldn't trust past 200k miles. Although I've seen one go 285k miles then jumping time and bending valves.

There's no way this car's on it's original belt 19 years and almost 200k miles. Not a chance.

Nothing written in the front or back of the owner's manual? No sticker somewhere under the hood? Nothing written on the timing belt cover? If you can't find anything, not much you can do.
Best thing to do would be to replace soon. Or risk it until it fails then replace the engine.

It's possible the receipt wasn't kept for that. Either way, I'd put everything I own on that not being the original timing belt. Not with that combination of mileage and age. With that being said, I wouldn't put the timing belt off without at least having it inspected.
