EGR Issues

Hi guys, been a minute since I have had to come here pleading for someone’s more infinite z
knowledge but, not real sure what is going on here. 1st off D17A engine non-vetch sohc, 5spd m/t, VP trim so pretty bare bones as far as every else goes but, noticed car was blowing smoke like it was burning oil and the level was down about 1/2 a qt., so topped it off and it seemed to be alright but steadily degraded to the point where I had to park it. Took the thermostat housing and EGR valve off and there is some kind of black sludge in both the intake and exhaust ports where the EGR mounts to the head. No oil or any type of contamination noticing the coolant. Pictures attached

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: EGR Issues

Probably just burning oil really bad which is clogging all the egr stuff. Can try cleaning it all out and reassembling

Thanks for the info. Do you think that it could be valves needing to be reseated or possibly a piston ring letting that kinda of oil by?

Re: EGR Issues

only way to know is opening the engine
most common is the oil rings collapsing with carbon build up, tho

Re: EGR Issues

Yay! That’s what I was afraid of. Well on a positive note, I guess, I just so happen to have a new set of rings and pistons on hand.
