Hi all,
I have a 2004 Honda Civic that I replaced the alternator on this summer. Shortly after I got a squealing, you can read about it here. It seemed that a belt was too loose from the repair.

After tightening the belt a bit, the squeak is gone but now I get a terrible knocking in that area. At that point I gave up in frustration and abandoned the repairs and some weeds grew up the sides of the car. But ultimately I need to do something with the car, either fix it or salvage it.

So now I am revisiting it, is it safe to assume the belt is too tight now? Is it possible the new alternator I bought is failing and how would I test that?

Tale the belt off, give the pulleys a spin to check if any seem weird, and then start the car, see if the noise is still there. Don't run it without a belt for more than a couple mins.
