Valve lapping [solved]

Posting here for clarity.

This kind of an order of operation question.

After the head is off does it make sense to go in this order?:
1. Overnight leak test
2. combustion dome surface cleaning
3. replace valve seals
4. valve lapping/seating
5 goto machine shop for resurface and hot tank
5a. Prepare block mating surface
6. Attach intake and new mani gasket
7. install head and cam
8 set valves lash
9. etc

Will the hot tank wreck my work on the valve seats and seals?

Probably a question you should ask the machine shop.

For future wrenches…

The machine shop said for a low-buck guy like me to strip the head of everything including springs, valves and seals. Give it to them to inspect and machine and clean, then reassemble and lap and lash.

makes sense to me. I just hope I don’t have to do the rings.

Wont be hard if you have to do them, head is already off, just pull the oil pan and girdle.

So you replace the pushrod journals/bearings as a rule or not unless they are shot?

If you don't see any obvious signs of wear I'd leave them. Can't remember, did you say if it was burning oil?

nope not burning oil…not obviously at least. Will see what the cylinders look like but I’m figuring on doing the rings anyway. I want another 100k out of this engine

re: Valve lapping [solved]

The way this worked out. I stripped the head down and kept it organized 1-8. Machine shop did a great job resurfacing and replace one helicoil for me. My daughter and I cleaned everything, put in the new stem seals, lapped each valve, and put the cam and rockets back on. We set the lash and put the intake on with the new gasket. Dropped it on the block and went from there.

Other than the valves themselves nothing looked terribly worn to the point of failure so we let it be where it made sense. I think it was a good call.
