Crank But No Start - High Miles

When I went to start my '01 LX recently, the engine fired for perhaps a half second then spun without firing. I removed the oil-fill cap and had the wife turn the key so that I could see if I had valvetrain movement. I do.

Just did a compression test on two cylinders and both have around 90 psi. I know that 90 psi isn't optimal but the engine has approximately 230K. It had a timing belt installed at 130K.

Wondering if perhaps the belt has jumped out of time but not sufficiently as to bend a valve. Certainly a bent valve would yield near zero compression.

I've yet to remove the front cover to check belt condition or check timing marks.

Verify mechanical timingDid you do a wet or dry compression test?
Got fuel? Got spark?

Re: Crank But No Start - High Miles

I can smell fuel. It rattles as though trying to start indicating spark. Comp test was just me plugging in the gauge and spinning it after it's been sitting for a couple of weeks.

Does the front cover have to be removed to check mech. timing? Does the cam cover have to be removed?

Thanks for the reply, btw.

I would actually check for spark.
the upper half of the timing cover has to come off, you can loosen or remove the valve cover
