Stripped oil pan studs
Stripped oil pan studs
So I got a JDM D17A VTec engine for my 2002 Civic LX 5 speed (D17A1 original engine), and somehow I managed to over torque the 2 leading crank pulley side oil pan studs. I put it together and LO! It sprays oil all over the crank pulley and belts and WOW what a mess. Normally my first reaction to a stripped stud like that would be a helicoil but that oil pump is RIGHT THERE. SO, my alternative solution I'm considering would be to liquid JB weld the studs back in place (it's 16ft-lb torque I think).
While I'm on the subject, Are the D17A1 and the D17A oil pans interchangeable? At a glance they seem to be the same. The oil pan that came with the new engine was dented in a place I can't get to and I'd like to swap them.
Anywho, I'm looking for feedback.

Re: Stripped oil pan studs
If I'm not mistaken, the oil pans for a VTEC vs non-VTEC are different. Non-VTEC pans are steel with a perma-molded gasket while the VTEC pans are aluminum with RTV.
If the studs are "stripped" as you state, then you would need to tap the threads with a die. No JB Weld should be required unless the studs have snapped clean off. Also, the studs on that side are integrated into the oil pump so replacing the oil pump should be the real fix here.

Man... I am so grateful you answered! I didn't even realize that about the oil pump. (It's also been a LONG time since I last removed the oil pump.) Both the oil pans on the D17A1 and the D17A that I have are steel and they have the same gasket. But that thing about the oil pump... You just saved me a ridiculous amount of aggravation! I can just either swap the oil pump from my old engine, snag another one, or just pull it and properly put those studs back in. Everything I was planning on doing prior to seeing your reply was going to be in situ and frankly just a massive PITA.
THANK YOU for your help!
