filtermag magnets? harmful at all?
filtermag magnets? harmful at all?
i was researching on these magnets called filtermags. its really just a big strong magnet you stick in your diff/tranny/oil pan to catch fine oil particles that could harm your engine and that your oil filter can completely miss, looks pretty neat..

i was wondering if this would be harmful to the engine somehow? i will be using the transmission magnet with 25lbs of pulling force and putting it inside my oil pan under the oil pick up. can this harm my engine in any way? only way i thought it would be harmful is if it somehow caught onto the crank or something [ i will put it under the baffle]
sorry if this sounds so noob lol.

Honestly, I've got a big red flag going up when you're talking about putting something in your oil pan, even if it is a magnet. That just doesn't sound like a good idea, IMO. If it were me, I would make sure it was necessary. Like, next time you change your oil, run it through a coffee filter, or even a clean t-shirt and see if you have any metal particles. I'd just be more than a little leery about putting something in my oil pan.
Another idea is a magnetic drain plug, I know those have given good results.

hmmm what if i put it outside the oil pan? the filtermag tranny magnets go outside the transmission casing and the metal still sticks to the magnet through the tranny case. would this be a better alternative? i think so.

It might, yeah. But again, you've got to wonder if the cons outweigh the pros here. I'd be a little leery about magnetizing my transmission case with a powerful magnet. Again, I'd make sure you need it first. If you've really got that many metal shavings in your oil, I'd be dealing with whatever's causing them. Treat the problem, not the symptoms.

alot of drain bolts are magnetic, plus good oil filters catch particles and crap like that. I happy with my wix filter. putting a magnet on it seems unecessary. dont waste your money it looks like a scam
Re: filtermag magnets? harmful at all?
scam? rofl. i just decided to get it and put it outside the oil pan and not inside. the drain plugs are pretty weak i dont think it will do that great of a job getting the gunk out. my buddy has a drain plug and it couldnt even hold a rachet. the filter mag can hold like 50lbs weights. sounds cool. lol

Its not for gunk.. its for metal shavings from wear/tear peices. gunk isnt magnetic.
All outboard lower units (boat motors) have magnetic drain plugs.. they're good tools to identify whats going on inside, so i'd recommend one for the oil pan.. but that thing just seems unnecessary.. 50 lbs.. come on..for WHAT?

Re: filtermag magnets? harmful at all?
my tranny drain plug was quite good at catching metal shavings. i personally think the drain plug and filter is good enough.
