Having a weird idle issue, just swapped heads.

Ok, off the rip when I did this it was necessary swap due to lack of options and funds. 05 civic ex, comes stock with D17A2. Head gasket blew, bought a jdm D17A. Put it in, swapped a couple part on the heads and it ran like a screaming banshee. Timing belt broke. Took out the lower cover, crank sensor, ripped the tension straight through the eye on the tensioner. Went to the A2, pulled all the parts that got broke. Pulled the head, put a straight edge on the bottom of the head and it actually looked great. Changed all the broken parts, put the A2 head on the A, set timing and assembled, including changing the swapped head parts back to the A2 head. And she crunk up on the first lick. On to the problem, I've been driving her for 2 weeks now and this is what I've got. When you fire up the car it revs between 1400 and 2400, after it warms up it settles at 1600, with a cammed like idle. When I do it like this low rpm cruising us a pain but I have full tach range, and I'm suspecting the vtec isn't kicking in. If I do not wait for it to level out the car still drives, but I cannot take the tach past 3400, limp mode is what I think it's called. It doesn't actually matter if the car is warm or cold, I can drive it for 39 minutes straight, if I turn it off and back on I have to wait till it settles, which takes around 45 seconds if it is warm. I've got no idea what's going on, changed the IACV and the vtec solenoid. I'm at a loss, starting to think I need buy one of those tuning mods, get it hooked up and see if it has a D17 frankintune for vtec. I'm at a complete loss and cannot find any info on this.

If it’s in limp mode, it will throw a code.

I think he means scan tool. AutoZone checks codes for free.

A visual inspection will also tell you if you have codes. Is your check engine light on?

no scan tool, check engine and maintenance required has been on since I've owned the car. I'm really just looking for someone else who has done this, or maybe thought about doing it. Can't find anyone who has.
